Lindsey Buckingham might be feeling sad that he can’t play ‘The Chain’ as a band with Fleetwood Mac again.
The rocker recently shared a video of himself on X while playing ‘The Chain’ and wrote in the caption:
“Some songs just stay with you.”
It seems like the track has a special place in Buckingham’s heart. ‘The Chain’ was released as part of the band’s ‘Rumours’ album. Writing credits include five members: Buckingham, Stevie Nicks, Christine McVie, and Mick Fleetwood.
Buckingham’s Earlier Words On The Song
Buckingham previously said the song opened their concerts for a long time, but it meant more than just that, as he explained:
“The thing about ‘The Chain’ is, yes, it’s a signature piece of ours. It’s also the spirit of the song and the content lyrically is very much in keeping with the legacy we built over a long period of time of always being able to rise above the difficulties in order to fulfill a greater destiny, so there was always a chain.”
The musician said the high point of the music came from a jam session. He described how the solo captures the energy of the room, building tension and then releasing it:
“It just all came out in the studio when we were recording. A lot of the emotion of those moments like that solo are very connected to what we were living.”
What Did Mick Fleetwood Say About ‘The Chain’?
Mick Fleetwood also praised the thematic riff as a major contribution:
“‘The Chain’ basically came out of a jam. It was put together, as distinct from someone literally sitting down and writing a song. It was very much collectively a band composition.”
After ‘Rumours’ became a hit, ‘The Chain’ became a regular opener at the band’s concerts. It was also the first track on ‘The Dance,’ a live CD/DVD from 1997, and on many of their greatest hits albums.
