Hulu has no doubt about the future of its legal drama, Reasonable Doubt, as the streamer just renewed the series for a third season. The Kerry Washington-produced show has been a low-key hit since it debuted in 2022, so it’s not surprising to see it getting another installment. Some fans, however, were unsure about its fate, as its second season concluded almost a month ago.
But there are no objections, as far as The Hollywood Reporter can tell, to this show returning to court.
The well-reviewed (and received) series came to Hulu from the Onyx Collective, with executive producers Kerry Washington, Pilar Savone, Larry Wilmore, and Anton Cropper. Creator and showrunner Raamla Mohamed also serves as an executive producer. Mohamed was also a former writer on Scandal — the show that made Washington a household name. The series has a 100% fresh rating for both seasons on Rotten Tomatoes.
What Is ‘Reasonable Doubt’ About?
The series Reasonable Doubt stars Emayatzy Corinealdi as a Los Angeles defense attorney named Jacqueline “Jax” Stewart, a hotshot lawyer on the rise, as she takes on high-profile case after high-profile case, showcasing her unique interpretations of the law — as well as the judgment she receives for her questionable ethics. The second season premiered on Thursday, August 22, and concluded in mid-October. The sophomore installment followed Jax as she defended her close friend Shanelle Tucker (played by Shannon Kane) against first-degree murder charges surrounding her abusive husband.
According to the show’s official synopsis, Jax’s friend is “claiming self-defense, but an uncompromising prosecutor thinks otherwise. Needing all the help she can get, Jax brings in an ambitious defense attorney to lead the case, but things get tense very quickly. Can Jax defend her friend, save her marriage, and protect her energy while being catapulted into the biggest case of her career? Or will she lose it all?”

Reasonable Doubt Review: A Steamy Law Drama with Serious Ethical Questions
Reasonable Doubt tackles the life and struggles of a successful Black female lawyer.
Also starring in Reasonable Doubt are McKinley Freeman (as Lewis Stewart, Jax’s husband), Tim Jo (as Daniel Kim, Jax’s investigator), Angela Grovey (as Krystal Walters), Thaddeus J. Mixson (as Spenser Stewart, Jax’s son), Aderinsola Olabode (as Naima Stewart, Jax’s daughter), Michael Ealy (as Damon Cooke, a previous client of Jax’s who was in prison), and Morris Chestnut (as Corey Cash, a talented defense attorney) who joined the show in season two.
Maybe the things that Jax does aren’t so unreasonable, considering how deeply fans connect with her imperfect humanness. Season one saw Jax take on a high-profile case involving Brayden Miller, a man accused of killing his employee, Kaleesha Moore, and the fallout of that result. Complicating all of this is (and was) Jax’s personal life, which features her two teen kids being teen kids, a dysfunctional marriage that has her questioning what she really wants out of everything, and more professional hurdles than any one person should endure.
That said, it all makes for a pretty riveting package with which fans really connect. Whatever the case may be, Hulu is not throwing the book at Jax and all her issues by any means (or whatever other legal bit of wordplay you want to add here).
