You might have heard the comments about Lars Ulrich and his drumming skills. Most listeners, and even some fans, think that he isn’t a great drummer and that another drummer could have been a better choice. However, classic Metallica producer Flemming Rasmussen doesn’t think so.
In a new interview with Daniel Sarkissian, Rasmussen acknowledged that while Ulrich may not be the greatest drummer in the world, his role made a big impact on the band:
“People can hate as much as they like. It’s become like a national sport for some. Yeah, he was not the world’s best drummer, but for Metallica, he is.”
He added:
“And he evolved. He’s gotten better and better, sh*t happened. From here to here, there was a huge development. Musically and technically, he’s really, really good.”
What Rasmussen Thinks Of ‘St. Anger’
Rasmussen produced ‘Ride the Lightning,’ ‘Master of Puppets,’ and ‘…And Justice for All.’ In the same interview, the producer shared his opinions about the band’s ‘worst’ album, ‘St. Anger.’ He said:
“Every second time I hear it, I go, ‘F*ck, that’s so great.’ They dare do something new, not just doing what they’ve always done. And then, the times in between, I go, ‘It sounds like the worst demo I’ve ever heard.’ So it’s, it’s kind of like that.”
Like fans around the world, the producer is also aware that the snare of the album sounds ‘annoying as hell’:
“Sometimes, I take it off after the first ten seconds, and other times, I listen to it to the end. Because it’s pretty demanding listening to. That snare sound is f*cking annoying as hell, right?”
