During a recent appearance on Appetite for Distortion, Lamb of God’s Mark Morton shared how Slash helped him on his way to sobriety.
The host mentioned how the guitarist talked about Slash’s efforts to get him sober in his new book, ‘
“Yeah, there’s not much to it. I didn’t actually check with Slash before I wrote that part of the book. So I hope he doesn’t mind me sharing that story. Maybe I should have reached out but I don’t think it’s anything.”
The musician recalled Slash’s attitude towards him:
“Slash has been pretty open about his experience with some of these things and so, when I was trying to get sober and well before I was able to accomplish any kind of sustained sobriety or recovery, Slash was very helpful. He’s very compassionate, very kind, and made himself available to me with some insight and perspective that he shared.”
Morton Thought Using Drugs Was Cool
Morton shared his mindset while using drugs and alcohol:
“Let me add to that. I think Slash and some other people who have been open about their experience with addiction, I’m the kind of person that has to think something’s cool to want to pursue it because see I have low self-esteem. So I want you to think I’m cool and cuz I’m not sure that I am.”
Mark is grateful to Slash and other names who have been open about their experiences:
“So with something’s cool, I’m going to chase it cuz I want to be that, and people like Slash who’s cool and people like others, I could name a list but that put themselves out there and shared their story and shared their experience made it look cool, made sobriety look cool to me and I’m grateful for that cuz that’s part of what it took.”
The guitarist has been sober for six years now. Morton talked about his sobriety in the lyrics of ‘All I Had To Lose,’ a song from his ‘Ether’ solo EP released in 2020. In 2021, Mark shared on X how he stayed sober despite occasional thoughts of using drugs. He remembered the negative feelings associated with drug use and used these memories to stay committed to sobriety each day.
