Kraven the Hunter, the highly anticipated superhero film based on Marvel’s iconic character, recently provided fans with an exciting glimpse at New York Comic Con. Sony Pictures unveiled the entire seven-minute opening sequence at NYCC, and while only a few promotional stills were released online, it was more than enough to build anticipation for what could finally be a well-received Sony Spider-Man Universe movie.
The screened footage hasn’t been made public yet, since another trailer is expected to be released in a week or two, but new stills from the movie have already circulated. In the opening sequence, Kraven (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) is shown to be viciously hunting down and killing several enemies, with gruesome shots emphasizing the character’s savagery. You can find new stills and footage below:
The footage was unveiled by Kraven the Hunter director J.C. Chandor, who went on to discuss what audiences can expect from the upcoming R-rated film, including the Marvel characters that will be featured in the film, aside from the already revealed Rhino. In his words,
“It’s not just Kraven. We’ve really gotten an opportunity to dive into the Marvel characters in a really cool way. We wanted to have the spirit of those characters be what fans want and also bring it to the screen in a new way. We’ve walked a tonal balance where, myself as a storyteller and as the director, I know the actors in every performance, we’re not breaking the fourth wall. We believe in this story like it was really happening.”
Following the screening of the film’s opening sequence, Taylor-Johnson took the stage to discuss his portrayal of Kraven, providing more info on the character’s personality and why he is a badass Spider-Man villain in the comics. He stated,
“He’s an apex predator, the top of the food chain. Kraven’s a hunter, not a poacher. Like every hunter knows, sometimes you have to cull the herd to preserve order. Of course, when he starts applying that to human beings, it becomes a pretty dark story.”
Kraven the Hunter Introduces the World’s Greatest Hunter
Kraven the Hunter, also known as Sergei Kravinoff, was initially planned to appear in Sam Raimi’s fourth Spider-Man film, but the project was shelved when the story was rebooted in the form of The Amazing Spider-Man. Nonetheless, it’s never too late for the greatest hunter in the Marvel universe to make his live-action debut.
Russian immigrant Sergei Kravinoff shares a complicated relationship with his father, Nikolai Kravinoff, which leads him down a path of unrelenting vengeance. Having pushed his body beyond human limits, Kraven is out to prove why he’s not only the world’s greatest hunter, but also the most feared.
