In a recent Instagram post, Korn’s Brian Welch clarified that his thoughts about Red Hot Chili Peppers’ music changed over the years.
He shared a news article with the headline ‘Korn guitarist Brian Welch admits he hates Red Hot Chili Peppers’ and wrote in the caption:
“Why do I have to keep correcting these media outlets? I don’t hate Red Hot Chili Peppers or Anthony Kiedis’s voice. I hated them in the 1980s because I was a close-minded metalhead only. Over time, I became more open-minded, and I grew to like and respect their style and sound.”
What Did Welch Say About RHCP Before?
Welch’s statements are related to his comments on RHCP in an interview with WSOU 89.5 FM last week. The musician talked about his earlier music taste and why he didn’t like RHCP:
“I was writing everything, and I was writing like the Dokken type of stuff. Music was starting to change then, and I wasn’t going with it yet because I didn’t like it. I didn’t like the Red Hot Chili Peppers. I didn’t like funk music. I liked the metal. So what they did is Red Hot Chili Peppers heard about Faith No More, and I like Faith No More more than Chili Peppers because at least they had crunchy guitars.”
In 2021, Welch also explained why he didn’t like Anthony Kiedis’s vocal style back then:
“I didn’t get the Chili Peppers; the guy couldn’t sing – the bass was good, but Anthony Kiedis was just annoying to me.”
As the guitarist made clear, RHCP’s music didn’t appeal to him before, and his opinion of them has changed over the years. He now appreciates the band’s style and sound.
