Oscar-winning British actor Colin Firth has officially signed on to star in Guy Ritchie’s upcoming Young Sherlock series for Prime Video. An exciting project that promises to take a deep dive into the origin story of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s beloved detective, it will explore the early life and career of Sherlock Holmes before he became famous.
The series is described as a coming-of-age story. It will obviously take place in Victorian London, taking us back in time to a pivotal moment in Sherlock’s life, when he was 19 and studying at Oxford University. Already grappling with disgrace and raw talent, things get harder for him when he’s forced to put his unfiltered approach to practice in solving a university murder.

Guy Ritchie will direct the new series, which promises a version of Sherlock Holmes that audiences have “never imagined before.”
Imagine a young Sherlock Holmes embroiled in his first-ever case – a murder mystery that not only threatens his freedom but leads him to uncover a conspiracy that will change his path as a detective forever. The series, which will consist of eight episodes, will capture the essence of a character we know so well. But with a fresh perspective.
Colin Firth, who is no stranger to period pieces and has received widespread acclaim for movies like The King’s Speech and the Kingsman franchise, will step into Young Sherlock’s world as a mysterious character named Sir Bucephalus Hodge.
Other Confirmed Cast Members and Producers
While there have been many adaptations of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s iconic detective over the years, the idea of a prequel series looks to expand on the usual on-screen appearances of the sleuth. The series boasts an impressive ensemble cast to deliver the story too. Hero Fiennes Tiffin will take on the titular role of young Sherlock Holmes. Starring alongside him are Joseph Fiennes and Natascha McElhone, who will play Sherlock’s parents. Zine Tseng portrays Princess Gulun Shou’an.
Additionally, the creative team behind Young Sherlock is also quite interesting. Guy Ritchie, known for his stylish direction in movies like Snatch and the Sherlock Holmes films starring Robert Downey Jr. will be in charge of directing and act as an executive producer. Matthew Parkhill serves as the showrunner and executive producer. He is known for his passion for faithful adaptations.

The rest of the producing team includes Simon Kelton, Ivan Atkinson, Simon Maxwell, Dhana Gilbert, Colin Wilson, Marc Resteghini. Hopefully, their combined experience will turn Young Sherlock into a high-quality series. That said, with such promising names connected to the project, and with Colin Firth now involved, Young Sherlock will definitely attract a curious audience when it premieres.
Meanwhile, it has been suggested recently that two other popular versions of the London detective are still very much alive, and could be returning at some point in the future. Ritchie’s own Sherlock Holmes series is eyeing a third outing for Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law despite it being more than a decade since Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows was released. The BBC series Sherlock, which stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman, is also potentially just waiting for the stars – or more precisely, scedules – to align for that journey to return for another TV outing.
