Despite having made sequels to almost all of his films (with mixed results), Kevin Smith has finally confirmed that one of his best movies is getting a second installment. Dogma, saw the infamous Jay (Jason Mewes) and Silent Bob (Smith) travel with a young woman, Bethany (Linda Fiorentino), the angel, Metatron (Alan Rickman), and the 13th disciple, Rufus (Chris Rock) to find God (Alanis Morissette) and prevent the demons Loki (Matt Damon) and Bartleby (Ben Affleck) from returning to heaven. Dogma has become a cult-classic — like most of Smith’s movies — earning a devout following, and angering several religious organizations in the process.
Fans have been waiting 25 years for Kevin Smith to return for Dogma 2. Speaking at this year’s Vulture Festival, Smith confirmed he’s in development on the long awaited sequel. The director began, joking that fans are skeptical about seeing a sequel to such a beloved movie, saying, “Some people will be like, ‘Don’t f*cking touch it. You’ll ruin it.'” However, Smith has now apparently found an idea worth returning for. He continued:
“And I’m here to tell you: I will. I’m f*cking tickled. I found a way in.”
Kevin Smith didn’t reveal any major plot details about Dogma 2. Although, he did tease that Matt Damon and Ben Affleck will return for the sequel. The original Dogma was the pair’s first movie together following Good Will Hunting (which Kevin Smith reportedly saved), and they have both returned on several separate occasions to cameo in Smith’s other recent films — we’re still waiting for Good Will Hunting 2: Hunting Season. But the director believes their returns will be far more than just a cameo. He said:
“I have been able to hold [Good Will Hunting] over both their heads for 25 f*cking years, which is why they keep showing up in all the movies. Expect a cameo from them — more than a f*cking cameo. The only way we get a Dogma sequel made is if they’re there. So count on those guys being there.”
‘Dogma 2’ Could Have Happened Much Sooner, But We’re Glad It Didn’t
Fans have been on tentative hooks for years, hoping that Kevin Smith would finally announce a sequel considering he’s made follow-ups to Clerks, and Jay and Silent Bob (with another one on the way). Smith revealed that Dogma 2 could have happened much sooner, but the director had a very good reason for turning down the sequel years ago.

Kevin Smith Reveals He’s Writing His Take on a Horror Classic
After Jay and Silent Bob: Store Wars, we could see Smith’s version of one of the greatest horror movies ever made.
Smith’s early movies were produced by Weinstein Co., and the director worked closely with Harvey Weinstein during his early career. When multiple accusations of sexual assault came to light against Weinstein in 2017, Smith distanced himself from the entire organization, and pledged all profits from his movies under the company to be sent to the Women in Film organization. Smith also revealed that Harvey Weinstein had previously offered him a deal to make Dogma 2 some years ago, which he declined at the time.
It has been a big few months for Dogma fans, as the film is also getting a new re-release. The film was reportedly being held hostage by the Weinstein Co. for years. But, Smith has since regained the rights to film. As a result, Dogma returned to theaters for its 25th anniversary, and is getting a new home video release. Here’s hoping it finally gets released on streaming in the near future.
