Jon Bon Jovi and Conan O’Brien recently took to the SiriusXM to chat about the upcoming docuseries ‘Thank You, Goodnight: The Bon Jovi Story.’ During their chat, Bon Jovi opened up about the ‘2020’ album and its struggle to bring out hits amid the pandemic:
“As long as I care enough… Look, our last album was called ‘2020,’ and I put it into this black hole called COVID, and it came out right. I couldn’t promote it in any way. I couldn’t tour it. It was a very topical record.”
The album was initially set to be promoted through a tour in the US that year, but these plans were cancelled due to the pandemic. About its lack of hits, the vocalist explained:
“It wasn’t an upbeat record. I’m writing songs about George Floyd and about COVID and about gun violence, and my audience was like, ‘Cool, no hits. Why?’ And I go, ‘Well, depressing songs about the mood in the world at the time.’”
New Album Will Be Different
Now, four years later, Bon Jovi is gearing up to release a new album titled ‘Forever,’ which moves away from the somber themes of its predecessor. Jon Bon Jovi shared:
“But here’s the diary of my life at that time. So, you write these songs, and I’m very proud of the record. Now, I’m in a better mood. We can go out. I don’t have to sit home and drink. I can go out.”
A new single from ‘Forever’ came out on March 14 following a teaser video on X, featuring two fans driving around in a car plated with ‘Bon Jovi Forever’ and listening to the band’s hits on the radio. In the video, Jon spoke of the upcoming album:
“Yeah, I’m really proud of this album. This album, the songwriting, I actually think it’s the best record we’ve made in 20 years. I think the fans are gonna love it. Bon Jovi Forever, baby.”
A Supporting Tour Is Not Definite
During the recording process, the frontman worked on ‘a song a day’ as he was still recovering from a serious vocal surgery. Now, he has plans to get well enough to ‘do two-and-a-half hours a night four nights a week for months on end.’
After releasing ‘Legendary,’ Jon shared about future tours:
“I don’t know about a tour. It is my desire to do a tour next year, but I’m just still recovering from a major surgery.”
The singer’s 2022 surgery aimed to fix a vocal cord which shrunk in size causing problems with his singing. With the upcoming release of ‘Forever’ on June 7, 2024, it’s unclear if a tour is feasible.
