John Mulaney is returning to the live show arena for Netflix’s upcoming live talk show series. The Chicago native’s career has expanded wildly after his start as a stand-up comedian and writer for Saturday Night Live. Since his beginnings on live television in 2008, the comedian has gone on to produce and star in multiple Netflix comedy specials, including the award-winning Kid Gorgeous in 2018 and Baby J in 2023. The comedy powerhouse didn’t leave the live stage completely, returning with actor Nick Kroll to co-create and star in Oh, Hello on Broadway in 2016.
Mulaney isn’t a stranger to hosting a talk show, either. Earlier this year, he created and hosted Netflix’s Everybody’s In L.A., a talk show that took advantage of the congregation of comedians in L.A. for the Netflix is a Joke festival. The actor originally wanted to make a live variety show playing off the talents of popular comedians, and is about to make his dream come true with a new live variety talk show on Netflix.
The multi-talented writer will act as co-showrunner and host of the new show produced by his company, Multiple Camera Productions. Netflix has been moving into the live production space with its cooking series Dinner Time Live with David Chang. Mulaney is sure to break new ground for Netflix’s new venture. Who knows what wacky and wild characters and comedians he’ll bring along this time?

Everybody’s in John Mulaney’s Orbit
In his decades-long career in comedy, Mulaney has made many connections which will surely help his new variety show. During his years at SNL, Mulaney established his comedic prowess with comedy sketches like the famous Stefon character he co-created with actor and comedian Bill Hader.
Mulaney is also an accomplished voice actor. He’s starred in the animated series Big Mouth with Nick Kroll and the award-winning animated film Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers with fellow SNL alum Andy Samberg. Mulaney also played the fan-favorite character Spider-Ham in the Into The Spider-Verse franchise – all of which were hugely successful, with Big Mouth spawning a spinoff series (Human Resources).
Not unlike other comedians who push the envelope in comedy, Mulaney has had a somewhat troubled and controversial past. Not only has he written jokes that actors refuse to perform, but he has also been open about his personal struggles. The comedian has famously struggled with drug addiction throughout his career, often using it in his writing, and in recent years has been open about his sobriety as well as using it to fuel new, fresh jokes. With his new lease on life, Mulaney is becoming even more successful in the comedy space. Hopefully, his new live variety show will add to his reputation as a modern comedy legend.
