Anthrax’s lead vocalist Joey Belladonna disclosed in a recent chat with Mike Hsu of the 100 FM The Pike radio station that he would be okay to replace Arnel Pineda in Journey.
When asked if a member of Journey had ever contacted him to discuss the possibility of singing with them, the rocker replied:
“No, and I’ve jammed with the… Many times I’ve done the crew soundcheck, and I’ve spent many days with the band overall. I don’t even wanna go into it, but we did a lot of stuff together here and there on shows that they did over the years.”
Detailing his bond with Journey, Belladonna added:
“So, and I know them, and I’ve been in touch with Deen [Castronovo, Journey drummer] a lot. But no, no one’s ever really asked me about joining or anything like that, which would’ve been interesting.”
The interviewer further questioned how the singer would react if he were to receive a call at this moment to be the new vocalist of Journey instead of Pineda. Joey noted:
“You know, I would definitely be really interested in doing that. That would be great. Not that I think that that’s gonna happen, but yeah, it would be great. I’d love that challenge. It would be great.”
It is not actually surprising that Belladonna received such a question as he’s part of a Journey tribute act called Beyond Frontiers, besides his tenure in Anthrax. The band also includes keyboardist Doug Carter, bassist Paul Arntz, guitarist Matt Basford, and drummer Justin Ward.
During the same interview, the vocalist revealed that he decided to start a tribute band because he’s loved Journey’s music for a long time and wanted to perform it live. In October and November, Beyond Frontiers will be on the road to perform in different cities of the US.
