While Jennifer Lopez’s Netflix films might not be well received critically, her latest release, Atlas, has an abysmal score on Rotten Tomatoes, there’s no denying she’s been a powerful draw on the streaming platform. 2023’s The Mother was better received, and it was also another Lopez-led hit for Netflix. Due to the success of those two movies, Netflix appears to be going all in on the actress after securing the rights to the romantic comedy Office Romance starring Lopez and Ted Lasso star Brett Goldstein.
According to Deadline, Netflix won the rights to the film in a bidding war with other studios. The movie’s script was co-written by Goldstein and Joe Kelly. The bet on Lopez has been a lucrative one for Netflix, as her films are among the most watched on the entire platform. Even if they don’t hold good audience or critic scores, it hasn’t stopped people from watching them. The Mother is among the top 10 most-watched movies on the platform, and Atlas has secured more than 73 million views so far. While there’s nothing groundbreaking about either film, it shows Lopez has star power among viewers.
Goldstein rose to worldwide fame thanks to his role as Roy Kent on Apple TV+’s Ted Lasso. The show’s third season wrapped up in 2023, but signs are pointing toward him making a return in Season 4, as options were picked up for himself, Hannah Waddingham, and Jeremy Swift with the intention of a fourth season being on the horizon. The season hasn’t officially been greenlit yet, but things are trending in that direction.
Jennifer Lopez Is a Romantic Comedy Veteran
While Lopez might be known for her singing career, she’s made quite a name for herself in the film world, too. The upcoming Office Romance is just the latest rom-com the actress has starred in. Other examples include Maid in Manhattan, Monster-in-Law, Shotgun Wedding, Shall We Dance?, and Marry Me. While not all of them have been hits among the general audiences, it’s clear she’s a household name in the genre.
Her latest musical release, This Is Me… Now, has an accompanying romantic musical film starring Jane Fonda, Fat Joe, Kim Petras, and her husband, Ben Affleck. The film was inspired by her marriage with Affleck, and it was released on February 16. On August 20, Lopez filed for divorce from Affleck, naming April 26 as the date of their separation. That date means just a little over two months after the film was released, something that celebrated their love, the pair were separated from each other.
Since their separation, the pair have been spotted in public together, suggesting that their relationship may not ultimately end in divorce. Lopez and Affleck previously dated and even became engaged from 2002 to 2004 before breaking up. The two of them rekindled the flame in 2021, and soon, they entered into their second engagement and eventual marriage. Despite their rocky personal life, Lopez is moving full steam ahead with her career.
