Jeffrey Dean Morgan’s role as Joe Kessler in The Boys did not pan out as many expected, but the actor is looking forward to hopefully getting to still appear with other characters in the fifth and final season of the comic book series. While there is one character fans really want Morgan to have some screen time with – Jensen Ackles’ Soldier Boy – it seems that the actor himself is a huge fan of the character.
The Boys put a twist on Morgan’s character in Episode 6, when it became apparent that Kessler was another hallucination of Billy Butcher’s tumor. This completely changed the game for the character, ruling out his ability to interact with anyone other than Butcher. However, it is clear that there is no way for Season 5 to happen without Morgan’s involvement, and he hopes that will see him share at least one scene with “one of the single greatest characters” on television. Speaking in a feature for Variety, Morgan said:
“I don’t know how you do Season 5 without an appearance, at least. That’s my feeling. I’ve never had any official talks about it, but I think it’d be really hard to carry on without some sort of resolution — and hopefully that’ll be a whole season! I want to have scenes with everyone that’s part of that show, but I obviously have a long-standing relationship with Jensen, especially. He’s like my brother. And then Jim is one of the coolest people in the world — so yeah, of course.”
Jensen’s Soldier Boy was one of the single greatest characters I’ve seen in television in a long, long time.
“His performance blew me away. I did want to work with him — and we also have a really good time together, the two of us, especially. And, obviously, that was a carrot in front of my face that I was chasing after, sure.”
The Boys Season 5 Will Bring the Story of Butcher and Homelander to a Violent End
While there are many characters still in play, The Boys has always been about one thing – the war between Butcher and Homelander. In an interview prior to the season finale, showrunner Eric Kripke shared his thoughts on the upcoming end of the series, explaining how there is only really one way for the story to be concluded.
“I will say that the big meta storyline of the series is these two forces of Homelander and Billy Butcher coming toward each other. Like these two meteors, two planets. Whatever the ending is, it has to heavily involve finally bringing that to a head with whatever disruption that entails. There are obviously other shows in this universe. There are obviously other corners of the universe to explore. However, this particular story is about Homelander and Butcher crashing into each other.”
