On a recent Metal Mastication show with former Megadeth bassist David Ellefson, former Megadeth guitarist Jeff Young recalled saying no to joining the band when he heard Dave Mustaine’s voice for the first time. He also talked about how he approached playing with them creatively.
He explained:
“That was about six months before [Megadeth members] were thinking of getting rid of Chris [Poland, guitarist] and Gar [Samuelson, drummer]. [Ellefson] played me, ‘Peace Sells’, and I was doing like a Gary Moore, John Sykes, Thin Lizzy [kind of music]. I heard his voice, and I was like, ‘No, thanks.’ So I passed on it then.”
Mustaine Doesn’t Think Young Did Anything ‘Significant’
Last year, Loudwire reported that Mustaine claimed the former Megadeth guitarist Marty Friedman is the only ex-member who’s ‘ever done anything significant.’ A month after the comments, Young responded to Mustaine’s statement.
Young played in the band’s 1988 ‘So Far, So Good… So What!’ before leaving the next year.
During an appearance on the Disturbing the Priest podcast, Young was asked about Mustaine’s comments. He responded:
“What about that little number one Brazilian world music album I did over here, douchebag?”
He added:
“It just promotes – and that’s [Mustaine’s] whole mission: just to promote disinformation and disinfo and lies. And the funny thing is he aims that song “Liar” [the penultimate track from ‘So Far, So Good… So What!’] at other people, and he needs to look in the mirror, man. Because the stuff you say and the songs you write you’re writing about yourself.”
