Twisted Sister guitarist Jay Jay French doesn’t think Jimmy Page deserves a bad reputation for playing the guitar ‘sloppy.’
During a new interview with Denim and Leather podcast, the guitarist defended the Led Zeppelin rocker and why it’s better to ‘be sloppy’ than be a ‘super shredder’:
“Jimmy gets a bad rep about being sloppy, but he wrote solos that you could play and you could remember. That’s a lot better than a lot of the super shredders today that are just playing everywhere on the neck, and there’s no connection to the song. It’s just exercising all over the place.”
Why Jay Jay Called Page Sloppy Earlier
This is not Jay Jay French’s first time calling Page sloppy.
When talking about Page’s guitar playing with Led Zeppelin live, Jay Jay mentioned that while Page was a great guitarist, his skills seemed to decline over time. Jay Jay critiqued Page’s approach by saying there was a clear difference between how he played in the studio and how he performed live:
“I saw Zeppelin a zillion times, and Page certainly was great. Way before anything, he was a session guy and established his cred. But as time went on, I thought his playing went sloppy, for me. That’s how I kind of look at it, for whatever reason…”
