The sculpture on the cover of Jane’s Addiction’s 1990 album ‘Ritual De Lo Habitual’ had been missing. The artwork has recently been found in a storage facility. However, the artist behind it isn’t happy that she isn’t credited for it.
Casey Niccoli, who used to work with Jane’s Addiction, co-created the sculpture with Perry Farrell. At the time, Niccoli was dating Farrell. However, Niccoli believes her relationship with him shouldn’t overshadow her artistic contributions as she stated in a recent post. She wrote:
“When the sculpture resurfaced, no one even thought to notify me, let alone include me. Despite an influx of comments on the Instagram post asking the band to credit me, I received no response from anyone involved. Sadly, this is a recurring theme in collaborations between men and women in romantic partnerships.”
She then admitted to being mad about it:
“Seeing that old artwork stirred something deep within me. A tidal wave of memories came rushing in, as anger swept over my body. It was a stark reminder of the complexities of collaboration and the invisible burdens that women carry in creative partnerships with their male counterparts.”
Niccoli And Farrell’s Relationship
Niccoli and Farrell broke up in 1993, while Niccoli was battling a serious drug addiction that left her homeless and desperate. During that tough time, she signed away the rights to her creative work for the band.
After leaving Jane’s Addiction, Niccoli focused on raising her two children, overcoming addiction, and starting college in 2021. Now, she works as a collage artist.
Jane’s Addiction is yet to respond to the accusations.
