James Young recently spoke about the idea of retiring from Styx after decades of performing in a chat with KSHE 95. He shared:
“Uhm… Maybe on an odd day when I haven’t slept, something like that, but I don’t know. My better half, I lost almost 20 years ago, and I haven’t found anyone that measures up to her, in my judgment.”
The guitarist’s wife, Susan, passed away in 2022. He added:
“So, a woman could probably talk me out of going on the road, but I haven’t found that woman yet. And I’m not really looking for her.”
Young and Chuck Panozzo are the only original members still in the lineup. The two have been playing as a band since 1972.

Styx welcomed a new member in May. Terry Gowan replaced Ricky Phillips as the bassist after the latter stepped down from touring to spend more time at home.
Phillips confirmed that this was only a break rather than a retirement and said in a statement:
“Presently, I have accepted an offer to co-produduce a project in a studio close to home. I’ve known since I was a kid that live performance is in my blood, so in time I will post any future engagements or commitments. But for right now, Melissa and I will share coffee talk and meals from home…with our critters close by.”
The new lineup is currently on a North American tour. Their next stop is Toronto, Canada, on June 14.
