James Gunn may be in the midst of finishing up filming on Superman, and ramping up production on Peacemaker season 2, but he still has time for the fans. In a response to a fan question on Threads, Gunn confirmed exactly when season two of Peacemaker takes place, with a tease of how he will address its continuity as a canon series in the new DC Cinematic Universe (DCU). For fans of the John Cena-led series, it provides some hope that there won’t be wholesale changes to the series and its characters.
Gunn had stated earlier this year that season 1 would not be canon in the new DCU continuity, but season 2 would be. When a user asked “Will it pick up where the first season left off or will it be very different to signify that the first season isn’t canon,” the co-chief of DC Studios provided details on the timeline, and addressed the canon issue. He said:
It essentially picks up where season 1 left off with a couple minor differences.
Gunn has previously stated that season 2 of Peacemaker would take place after the events of the upcoming Superman reboot. With season one no longer canon, that makes his mention of “minor differences” to address the change odd. After all, the finale featured a cameo from the Snyderverse’s Justice League, with Aquaman (Jason Momoa) and The Flash (Ezra Miller) actually visible and speaking lines (the others were obscured in shadows). It would seem that it would take more than a few “minor” changes to address this, but it remains to be seen what Gunn has in store.
His comment indicates that Peacemaker may be more closely connected to the DCU films, and its characters, than originally thought. It also raises the possibility of high-profile crossovers from those films. Currently, it remains unclear exactly how the events of Superman will affect the plot of Peacemaker’s second season, given their wildly different tones and storylines.
What’s New in Peacemaker Season Two?
Although James Gunn remains surprisingly open and talkative about all the upcoming films and series in the DCU, he is careful about spoilers. He seems completely unbothered by the photo leaks from the Superman set, however, stating we haven’t seen anything major from the film yet. For Peacemaker, he’s been equally secretive, but has confirmed returning cast members.

Peacemaker provided audiences with moments of sacrifice and multiple grapples with mental health. Here we look at the scenes that left an impact.
Gunn stated in February that Adedbayo (Danielle Brooks), Harcourt (Jennifer Holland), and Economos (Steve Agee) will all return, which means their character arcs will continue to develop, which was a big reason why the first season connected with viewers. In addition, it has also been announced that Marvel actor Frank Grillo (Captain America: The Winter Soldier) will appear as Rick Flag Sr. in season two, seeking revenge on Peacemaker for the death of his son in The Suicide Squad. Grillo will actually make his debut as the character in the animated DC series Creature Commandos. On top of all that, Gunn did confirm a new opening theme (and dance, we assume) would debut with season two.
