Tenacious D will continue their career in the rock scene.
Speaking to Variety’s Marc Malkin at the ‘Borderlands’ premiere on Tuesday night, Jack Black talked about the future of Tenacious D after his bandmate, Kyle Gass, made a controversial comment about Donald Trump’s attempted assassination in July:
“We need to take a break. Everybody needs a break sometime. And we’ll be back.”
When asked if he’s spoken to Gass since canceling the tour, Black replied:
“Yeah, we’re friends. That hasn’t changed. These things take time sometimes… And we’ll be back when it feels right.”
Why Did Gass Face Backlash?
On July 14, Tenacious D performed at the ICC Sydney Theatre, a day after a shooting at a Trump rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. During the show, Black brought a birthday cake for Gass, who turned 64. When Black asked Gass to make a wish, Gass replied:
“Don’t miss Trump next time.”
Last month, Jack announced on social media that he was canceling Tenacious D’s tour because of backlash against Gass. The musician said in a statement:
“I was blindsided by what was said at the show on Sunday. I would never condone hate speech or encourage political violence in any form. After much reflection, I no longer feel it is appropriate to continue the Tenacious D tour, and all future creative plans are on hold. I am grateful to the fans for their support and understanding.”
Gass also apologized on Instagram in a now-deleted post, saying:
“The line I improvised onstage Sunday night in Sydney was highly inappropriate, dangerous, and a terrible mistake. I don’t condone violence of any kind, in any form, against anymore. What happened was a tragedy, and I’m incredibly sorry for my severe lack of judgement. I profoundly apologize to those I’ve let down and truly regret and pain I’ve caused.”
Dave Grohl recently played Tenacious D’s song ‘Tribute’ at a Foo Fighters concert in Denver to show support for Tenacious D. Grohl sang part of the song but admitted he didn’t know all the lyrics since he only played drums on it.
