The universe of Pixar’s Inside Out is expanding. It was revealed at Disney’s D23 conference on Friday that a new series, Dream Productions, will premiere on the streaming service sometime in 2025. Set in the same world, it will delve into the imaginative world of Riley’s dreams and explore the inner workings of the dream studio where Riley’s nighttime imaginings are crafted. Pixar’s Chief Executive Officer, Peter Docter, unveiled the news at D23, describing the show as an “in-betweenquel” that is set between the events of the first Inside Out movie and its sequel, Inside Out 2.
He further elaborated by saying that Dream Productions will offer a behind-the-scenes look at how dreams are produced in the world of Inside Out, as well as the creativity and chaos that goes into fabricating Riley’s dream world. Check what he had to say about the spinoff below:
“I just want to start by thanking all of you for going to theaters and making
Inside Out 2
the number one animated film of all time. We are so proud that this film has connected with so many people. And if you love the film as much as we do, I’ve got some great news: emotions will be in the air for a little while as we are excited to announce a brand new Disney Plus series, inspired by the world of
Inside Out
, called
Dream Productions
.It’s a series we’ve been working on for a little while and it’s set between
Inside Out 1 and 2
, so think of it as an in-between-quel. It’s a show set in the studio where Riley’s dreams are made every night, on time and on budget.”
The original Inside Out, released in 2015, took us inside the mind of an 11-year-old girl named Riley, where her emotions – Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear, and Disgust – navigated the pains of growing up. A critical and commercial success that grossed over $850 million at the global box office, it spawned a sequel, Inside Out 2, which premiered this year. The movie continued Riley’s story as she dealt with adolescence, introducing new emotions such as Anxiety, Envy, and Nostalgia. The sequel has since become a huge success, breaking a major box office record. It’s not clear whether the original characters from Pixar’s most cherished franchise (voiced by Amy Poehler, Phyllis Smith, Lewis Black, and more) will return to Dream Productions or not, but the announcement is definitely an exciting one for fans.
Dream Productions Is Not the First Pixar Spinoff on Disney+
While Inside Out is one of Pixar and Disney’s most popular and beloved film franchises, it is not the first time one of their animated properties has been expanded into a streaming television series. In 2021, Disney+ debuted Monsters at Work, a sequel series to the 2001 blockbuster Monsters, Inc. Set only a day after the events of the original movie, the sitcom focuses on the transition from “scare power” to “laugh power” at Monsters, Incorporated.

Here are some hidden Disney treasures that were released straight to video and never made it to the big screen.
The protagonist of Monsters at Work is Tylor Tuskmon, a recent Scare Major graduate, who finds himself reassigned to work as a mechanic on the Monsters Inc. Facilities Team (MIFT). He works alongside Mike and Sulley and gradually learns to adapt to his new role in a laugh-powered world. The second season of the show premiered earlier this year on Disney+
The success of Monsters at Work is testament to Disney’s ability to expand a story into new formats and provide fans with fresh content while still honoring the charm and appeal of the original movies. With Dream Productions, Disney and Pixar aim to duplicate the success and offer a more innovative and heartwarming glimpse into Riley’s fascinating mind.
