Hulu has made many animation fans happy by confirming that one particular Cartoon Network series will not be leaving the platform as feared. Over the Garden Wall has become a cult classic, and one that gains plenty of attention as Halloween approaches. Featuring the voice talents of Elijah Wood, Christopher Lloyd, Tim Curry and more, the ten-episode series of short episodes has gained a huge following thanks to its spooky and moody animation style.
Fans started to fret over the possibility of losing the show from Hulu when it was flagged up as a series that was about to be removed due to an expiring license. Many fans took to social media to share their sadness at the idea of losing the show from another platform after it was purged from Warner Bros.’ Max streaming service as part of their clear-out of content. However, this led to Hulu sharing a reply that confirmed Over the Garden Wall will not be leaving the platform anytime soon.
The short confirmation read, “We do our best to keep content for as long as possible, but once our rights to stream expire, the content must be removed. However, we can confirm Over the Garden Wall will not be expiring and the badge will be removed soon. Happy streaming!”
One person who seemed to be happier than most was series creator Patrick McHale, whose credits also include working on Adventure Time and as co-writer of Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio. The series was based on his own animated short, Tome of the Unknown, and was expanded into the limited series for Cartoon Network after becoming a huge hit. In a post on X/Twitter, McHale said, “Over the Garden Wall is NOT leaving Hulu! Just got official confirmation! (Most episodes are already back up and the rest should be up before too long). Phew!”
Over the Garden Wall Has Gained Cult Status
Over The Garden Wall is a title that many will not have actually heard of, but those who have taken it to their hearts and make it an annual watch around this time of year. Combining whimsical characters and a mysterious air, the story of brothers Wirt and Greg embarking on a journey through a magical land dressed in their Halloween costumes is one that has over the years drawn comparisons to other emotionally driven animated projects by the likes of Hayao Miyazaki.
The series, now celebrating its 10th anniversary, has received no critic’s reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, however, and perhaps more importantly, it holds an impressive 95% Popcornmeter. The show has been hailed as one of the greatest animated series ever created by many, with very few not immediately being endeared by its quirky story. Now for those who have not yet had the pleasure of bringing Over the Garden Wall into their lives, Hulu will remain the place to go to track it down and add it to their Halloween playlist.
