Coming off of the high of the record-breaking summer blockbuster Deadpool & Wolverine, Hugh Jackman has some exciting and unconventional plans for the future. With the incredible box-office performance of his latest Wolverine appearance, people might assume Jackman would ride out the success in other action comedy movies, but the X-Men actor is instead returning to his musical roots. Jackman has shown off his considerable musical talents in movie musicals The Greatest Showman and Les Misérables, and now the triple threat is joining Kate Hudson, who just released an album, in a new musical from the director of Hustle & Flow.
Kate Hudson and Hugh Jackman will co-star in director Craig Brewer’s new musical drama Song Sung Blue. Based on a 2008 documentary of the same name by director Greg Kohs, Song Sung Blue will tell the story of two struggling musicians, played by Jackman and Hudson, who form a Neil Diamond tribute band, fulfilling their dreams and finding love along the way. Like her co-star, Hudson also has a background in movie musicals. She won a Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in Cameron Crowe’s Almost Famous. The actress also recently released her debut studio album Glorious, preparing her for the upcoming musical role.
Director and writer Brewer also has a background in musicals, having directed the aforementioned Hustle & Flow as well as the remake of Footloose. With a star-studded cast well-versed in music, including Ella Anderson, singer-songwriter King Princess, Mustafa Shakir, Michael Imperioli, Fisher Stevens, and Jim Belushi, Brewer will hopefully knock it out of the park.

What’s your favorite Hugh Jackman performance that isn’t Wolverine?
Even before all the hype revolving around Deadpool and Wolverine began, actor Hugh Jackman was already well attached to the X-Men character for movie enthusiasts. He was the most important – if not, the most iconic figure from the 20th Century Fox movies that began releasing almost twenty five years ago. With that being said though, Jackman has an impressive credit list aside from all that he’s done in the superhero genre. From being Jean Valjean in 2012’s theatrical adaptation of Les Miserables to stepping into the shoes of P.T Barnum in The Greatest Showman, the man has shown his acting depth. Put aside Logan for a moment, if you will. What is your favorite Hugh Jackman performance?
Are Musical Movies Making a Comeback?
With recent movies like Wonka, The Color Purple, and the upcoming Wicked adaptation, musicals seem to be on the rise. Even Song Sung Blue developer Focus Features has a new musical from musician Pharrell Williams titled Piece by Piece. In partnership with toy company LEGO, the animated biopic musical uses animated LEGO pieces to tell the life story of the multi-talented superstar. The influx of musical movies doesn’t show any signs of slowing down with Song Sung Blue on the horizon.
Hugh Jackman has starred in some of the most popular musical movies and musical adaptations, winning Golden Globe Awards for both Les Misérables and The Greatest Showman. However, Jackman hasn’t been seen in a musical in quite some time. In addition to Song Sung Blue, Jackman will be returning to the stage to perform a 12-concert residency at Radio City Music Hall next spring and summer. Movie audiences can look forward to his and Hudson’s return to movie-musicals and hope Song Sung Blue will open more doors for future musical roles.
