While chatting with PEOPLE for this week’s cover story, the news anchor, 60, gave an update on her daughter , 5, who experienced a sudden in February 2023 that left the family searching for solutions and settling into a . (Kotb declines to share the specific ailment out of privacy concerns.)
In the last six months, the mom of two says, “,” and moved Hope and big sister , 7, out of New York City and into Westchester. Since the move, Kotb tells PEOPLE that Hope is “thriving” and “improving.”

“We’re in a place where Hope is thriving,” Kotb tells PEOPLE. “She’s improving, we’re watching her, and I think as time goes on, we’ll have a better handle on it, but we’re already seeing great differences.”
She continues, “We really have excellent care; I have people helping us out. I feel like she is finding steady footing.”
When talking to PEOPLE again in August, Kotb shared her reasoning for the big move, saying, “I want my kids to feel grass on their feet, and play in the yard, and ride bikes down the street, and run up and down the stairs.”

“I just see that life for them in this perfect house in this beautiful little town where I know they’ll be able to blossom into beautiful, independent, strong women.”
Kotb also made another major change this year, announcing in September that she will be to focus on her kids.
“My broadcast career has been beyond meaningful, a new decade of my life lies ahead, and now my daughters and my mom ,” she explained to staff of the NBC morning show, shared Thursday, Sept. 26. “I will miss you all desperately, but I’m ready and excited.”
She’ll stay in her current role until the beginning of 2025. But she won’t be absent from the network entirely after the new year; Kotb will remain on in some capacity, writing, “Happily and gratefully, I plan to remain a part of the NBC family, the longest work relationship I’ve been lucky enough to hold close to my heart.”
