Hugh Grant has scored another winner with Heretic. The actor’s new horror film was one of the darlings at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), and the critics’ reviews have resulted in Heretic registering an impressive 93% on the Tomatometer against 60 reviews currently posted on Rotten Tomatoes. And his spine-tingling performance continues the actor’s incredible renaissance, which includes recent Grant must-sees with stellar RT scores like 2017’s Paddington (99%), 2023’s Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves (91%) and 2016’s Florence Foster Jenkins (88%).
Anna Miller of DiscussingFilm raves about Grant’s Heretic in her review, and she scores the film 4 out of 5 stars. “With some biblically accurate scares and bone-chilling tension, and the addition of one wickedly charming Hugh Grant, Heretic is the kind of idiosyncratic thriller/horror film that cannot be replicated,” Miller writes. And Brian Tallerico of RogerEbert.com declares Heretic is a “clever” horror movie and scores it 3 out of 4. Tallerico elaborates in his critique:
“There have been hundreds of horror flicks about religious zealots using violence to get their way, but this clever flick is more of a mind game, a study in not just what stories we’re told but who has been telling them to us.”
Tessa Smith of Mama’s Geeky also climbs aboard the Heretic bandwagon. “Hugh Grant has never been as terrifying as he is in Heretic,” Smith writes in her assessment. “A brilliant film that will have viewers considering their own beliefs as it explores religion as a whole.” And MovieWeb’s own Murjani Rawls concurs and declares the upcoming A24 cinematic venture is “enough to send a crack through your belief system.”
Hugh Grant’s Heretic Plans to Scare the Hell Out of Audiences
Hugh Grant found real-life inspirations which helped bring his conniving character, Mr. Reed, to terrifying life in the horror film, Heretic. A24’s upcoming flick is currently tracking to make somewhere between $7 million and $12 million domestically over its opening weekend in November (per Boxoffice Pro), and the critics can’t sing the movie’s praises enough. Variety’s Peter Debruge does take a shot at the film’s delicious fruity dessert, though, in his review. Debruge writes:
“The lesson this sicko has planned is to Bible study what ‘Saw’ is to shop class. But this is Hugh Grant we’re talking about. When his character, the innocuously sweater-clad and bespectacled Mr. Reed, answers the door, the young women have no reason to question his motives, or his generous offer of fresh-baked blueberry pie […] Go with it, and Heretic can be an entertaining ride. It may not change your mind about religion, but you’ll never think of blueberry pie the same way again.”
Collider’s Ross Bonaime scores Heretic 7 out of 10 in his review. “Heretic is a clever twist on the religious horror genre, bolstered by three strong performances, particularly Grant’s gregarious yet haunting Mr. Reed.” However, Bloody Disgusting’s Meagan Navarro isn’t as enthusiastic about A24’s new film, except for Grant’s performance. Navarro writes:
“It turns out that the effervescent but neurotic wit and charm that made Hugh Grant an enduring romantic lead actor translates quite well to horror. His disarming villain, an impish type who delights in psychological and theological warfare, elevates Heretic […] The self-contained chamber piece gets hung up in its basic lecture on religion…
But the smart casting, powerhouse performances, and an infectious sense of humor ensure that it remains engaging […] A movie that’s ultimately carried on the back of its villain, and Grant’s amusing portrayal of Mr. Reed might be just enough to make you a convert.”
