It’ll be a few years before new students are admitted into Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, as HBO have given fans a rough and very long timeline for the Harry Potter reboot series. The show will adapt each of J.K. Rowling’s beloved novels into a season of television, allowing fans to spend more time with the eclectic students and teachers at Hogwarts. While many are excited about the prospect, some audiences have turned on the reboot (as most fans do with most reboots), labeling it as an unnecessary remake.
For the fans who are excited about the new HBO Harry Potter series, simmer those expectations for the minute, as HBO and Max CEO Casey Bloys said it will be a couple of years before the show hits the esteemed network. The reboot is still in the very early stages of development and, like a lot of HBO shows, it will take a long time to hit our screens. Fans presumed that we could see the show sometime in early 2026, some even optimistically (or naively) suggested 2025.
“It’ll probably be 2027.”
“When we started the whole thing, we kind of laid out a, ‘Oh it could be… it’ll probably be [2027], top of ’27,'” Bloys told Collider. Considering the show hasn’t even found its leading trio (Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, and Ron Weasley), even 2027 could be optimistic. The HBO boss then tacked on that 2027 isn’t a definitive date. He continued:
“Something like that,
but don’t hold me to any of that
because, you know, we’re just getting started with the writing and casting process.”
HBO Wants to Reduce the Wait Between Harry Potter Seasons
The 2027 release date might not be the dose of Liquid Luck the fan base was hoping for, but, Casey Bloys did deliver some good news. Once 2027 rolls around, and Season 1 is on our screens, it shouldn’t take anywhere near as long for Season 2 to drop, as HBO are considering shooting the two debut seasons back-to-back.

Warner Bros. Wants Harry Potter to Become the Next Batman
Warner Bros. could reboot Harry Potter multiple times in the future, introducing new actors with each version.
It’s part of HBO’s plan to keep the actors looking like the ages of the characters. As puberty hits at around 11-13, children turn into teenagers very fast, and the cast members of HBO’s Harry Potter could quickly outgrow their roles, especially in the first two years. “One of the ideas we’ve talked about is shooting the first season and the second season very close to each other time-wise,” Bloys began. The CEO said that HBO might only do this with the first two seasons, to avoid any unexpected growth spurts from the cast. However, teenagers physically age slower, so the studio is less concerned about them looking too old for the characters in later seasons. He explained:
“From 11 to 13, is a big jump in kids’ lives. You can get away with 13 to 15, something like that. So we are going to have to think about scheduling and shooting so that they don’t grow too much between seasons. It is a consideration.”
The casting process for Harry Potter is in the early stages, but the one major role that HBO has an actor already in mind for is Mark Rylance as Dumbledore. Although a deal has not been finalized yet, many expect him to be the first of many to join the upcoming reboot. Meanwhile, fans anxiously await news of who will form the main trio of young wizards.
