Retirement clearly isn’t in the cards for Harrison Ford. As it turns out, the 82-year-old, Oscar-nominated thespian (Best Actor | Witness) continues to get “essential human contact” out of each and every acting job he takes. At this stage of his career, Ford also admits he is still having “fun” starring as Dr. Paul Rhoades in the Apple TV+ series Shrinking with Jason Segel, and Season 2 of the highly anticipated dramedy drops later this week. In a recent interview, the Star Wars and Indiana Jones phenom was asked what he gets out of acting all of these years later, and Ford answered by telling Vanity Fair:
Oh man, I get out of it essential human contact. I get to imagine with people that have great skill and experience…. It’s fun to work with these people.
Ford is entering his second season as a performer on Shrinking, and the Apple TV+ series gives him the chance to continually flex his comedic acting muscles. The show’s co-creator, Bill Lawrence, has gone on record saying that “commitment” is what makes Ford so funny, particularly where his character, senior therapist Paul, is concerned. And Ford replied to that assessment by saying:
“What Bill has said about commitment is true. You really believe that the character believes what he’s talking about. When they have such range and depth, you can get away with the kind of humor that we do and have it serve both the serious purposes and the entertainment that we hope to bring.”
Look for ‘Crazy Storylines’ in Shrinking Season 2
Shrinking’s Ted McGinley teases “crazy storylines” are coming in Season 2 of the Apple TV+ dramedy, which is sure to delight real-life fans and get under the skin of Dr. Paul Rhoades (Ford) on-screen. Okay, so sure, on the show Paul isn’t crazy about coming out of his office because he has to deal with the shenanigans of other therapists like the grieving Jimmy (Segel). And while those situations often ensue in hilarity, Ford continues to temper his comedic performance of the senior therapist with Paul’s uber intelligence. The actor said during the same interview with VF:
“Well, I think he actually is as smart as he thinks he is, and I am not going to give that up. I think we know these people. We know them deeply, more deeply than normally. We know the depth of their emotional situation. It allows the comedy to be more real. Or feel more real.”
Ford’s co-star, McGinley, made a name for himself in television over the course of his illustrious career, particularly when he joined the cast of Married… with Children as Marcy’s (Amanda Bearse) new husband and fan-favorite Jefferson D’Arcy in Season 5 of the classic comedy. And in an exclusive interview with MovieWeb back in March, McGinley promised fans they’d see a lot more of his character, Derek, in Season 2. McGinley said:
Derek is going to have a little more to do. It’s going to be fun… funny. There are a lot of crazy storylines, and I think it’ll be compelling television.
