Sophia Bush has officially scrubbed in to Grey’s Anatomy, where her character wasted no time getting entangled with the messy love lives of the doctors.
Bush, 42, plays Seattle Presbyterian trauma surgeon Dr. Cass Beckman, who is married to a cardiothoracic doctor named David (Wil Traval). The couple met up with longstanding Grey’s twosome Teddy Altman (Kim Raver) and Owen Hunt (Kevin McKidd) during the latter’s date night. (Owen is the chief of trauma at Grey Sloan Memorial, while Teddy is its chief of surgery.)
“Teddy, I thought we said no screens,” Owen said before Teddy profusely apologized for checking on one of her cardio patients. “Maybe, use an intern and tell them to call … Beckman!”
Owen then shook David’s hand, who introduced his “incredible wife.”
“We met at that boring dinner last year,” Bush’s Cass said.
After the brief introduction, both Owen and David were paged about an incoming emergent trauma — two teens were crushed by a stage collapse at an air guitar competition — and encouraged Teddy and Cass to enjoy the meal together instead.
“Why don’t you two stay? At least somebody can have fun,” David insisted.
After exchanging nervous chuckles, Cass and Teddy agreed to stay. Throughout the dinner, they discussed their respective busy medical careers and the origins of their marriages.
“You were in the military? You look so put together in your boss-lady heels, who knew?” Cass quipped. “Do you want to ditch this place and go somewhere that serves fries instead of pomme frites?”
Teddy concurred, and the pair traded the stuffy French restaurant for a more casual bar. There, they commiserated over balancing motherhood and marriage with medical duties. (Teddy and Owen share two kids, as do Cass and David.)
“I get home and I just want to crawl into my bed and David has taken apart our kids’ marble run and my son is freaking out,” Cass lamented. “So, now I have to reconstruct that, too, and [David] wonders why I’m not in the mood.”
Teddy then revealed her rocky relationship status with Owen, including the fact that they are now “scheduling sex and it’s going about as well as you can imagine.”
“You’re fine. We’re not at work,” Cass replied after Teddy apologized for saying too much. “You have to get it out somewhere.”
She added, “Listen, a few years back, David and I went through a really rough patch. We couldn’t talk without arguing. The spark was gone. I didn’t know if we were going to make it, [so] we opened our marriage. … Yeah, we date and sleep with other people. I mean, with boundaries, of course.”
A shocked Teddy subsequently revealed that she and Owen were monogamous, but she still stayed for the rest of the drink with Cass. At the end of the night, Cass leaned in to kiss Teddy.
The military vet, however, quickly pulled away and told Owen immediately once she returned to the hospital.
“You were both drunk? Did you kiss her back?” Owen asked. “How [did she get the wrong idea?] … Two minutes ago, I was asleep and now you’re telling me that some woman kissed you? You know what, I have to go do rounds.”
Grey’s Anatomy airs on ABC Thursdays at 10 p.m. ET.
