Production of Good Omens‘ final season has reportedly been halted following the recent accusations regarding writer Neil Gaiman. Good Omens premiered on Prime Video on May 31, 2019, and was adapted from the 1990 novel Good Omens: The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch which was written as a collaboration between authors Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman. Season 2 premiered on July 28, 2023, and in December of that year, it was confirmed the series would return to Prime Video for a third and final season. Yet in July 2023, multiple sexual assault allegations were leveled against Neil Gaiman, and the fallout has been present across various platforms.
According to Deadline, production on Good Omens final season, which is currently filming in Scottland, has paused. While no reason was given for the production pause, Deadline reports that there are discussions about possible production changes. These changes could be centered on the involvement of Gaiman, who served as the showrunner, and was an executive producer on the series. Prime Video has not made an official statement regarding the production halt.
Neil Gaiman’s Allegations Impact on His Projects
Neil Gaiman was once seen as one of the most acclaimed and respected authors in literature and comics. His work on titles like The Sandman, Coraline, Stardust, American Gods, and many others made him a revered figure, which has made the allegations against him all the more shocking. Starting in July 2024, U.K.-based Tortoise Media released the podcast Master: the Allegations Against Neil Gaiman, which chronicled the accounts of five women who have accused Gaiman of sexual harassment and assault, detailing graphic accounts of him forcing himself on these women. Gaiman has denied these allegations, yet the news has been troubling, as the various studios that have adaptations of Gaiman’s work have been forced to grapple with these accusations.
Just over a week ago, Disney halted development on a project adapting Gaiman’s YA book series, The Graveyard Book. While not linked to the sexual assault allegations, Netflix recently canceled Dead Boy Detectives, which is a spin-off of Gaiman’s The Sandman. The Sandman Season 2 is also in the middle of production, and while no news has emerged about how the allegations against Gaiman will impact that series, a change behind the scenes could yet happen. Prime Video will need to move quickly to resume production on Good Omens as they will lose money every day production is halted. The COVID-19 pandemic already imposed a major four-year gap between Good Omens Season 1 and Season 2, and now, a production delay likely means that Good Omens Season 3 won’t arrive until late 2025.
