As Neil Gaiman‘s big and small screen projects hang in the balance following allegations of sexual assault against the author, Good Omens fans have been given some closure — although it’s not exactly what they were hoping for. Based on the novel co-written by Gaiman and the late, great Terry Pratchett, Good Omens follows the angel Aziraphale (Michael Sheen) and the demon Crowley’s (David Tennant) unlikely friendship across millennia. When Crowley is tasked with looking after the son of Satan, who will bring about the end times, the reluctant demon accidentally loses him and the pair must race to recover the Antichrist.
Per Deadline, Good Omens will receive a send-off of sorts via a 90-minute final episode. The feature-length episode will stand in place of a full third season which was in the works at Prime Video. Production was halted on Season 3 following the ongoing allegations against Gaiman. The author offered to step away from the show’s production, but it appears that Prime Video is anxious to fully re-commit to the show considering its close attachment to the author. Production on Season 3’s single episode will resume in early 2025. A new writer has also stepped in to pen the script for the final episode. However, the report suggests that no deal has been closed on a new screenwriter. Gaiman and his production company, Blank Corporation, have completely detached themselves from the final season.
Fans were surprised when Prime Video greenlit a second season of the beloved show. Season 1 adapted the entirety of Gaiman and Pratchett’s novel. Considering the emotional connection Gaiman had to the book, due to the passing of Terry Pratchett, it was assumed that Good Omens would be a limited series. However, Gaiman returned to pen a second season, which released on Prime Video in 2023 to similar acclaim and fanfare. After Gaiman penned one original season, fans hoped that the author would return endlessly to keep the show running well into the double-digit season range. While the news of Good Omens ending is a bummer, fans should at least be happy the series has been granted closure.
Many of Neil Gaiman’s Projects Have Been Canceled
News of the allegations against Neil Gaiman hit his devout fan base hard. For decades, the author was renowned as one of the kindest and most beloved writers around. Fans have endlessly re-read and re-watched his novels, comics, and the movie and TV adaptations of them. However, the future of the Gaiman-verse (as it’s unofficially known) is a major uncertainty.
After the allegations surfaced in July, several of the author’s upcoming projects were quickly shelved. The Sandman tie-in show, Dead Boy Detectives, was given the ax by Netflix after just one season. The series followed two minor characters from The Sandman comic books, who start their own undead detective agency while escaping from the grim reaper. Disney then halted any development on the upcoming adaptation of Gaiman’s beloved children’s novel, The Graveyard Book.

The second season of Netflix’s The Sandman adaptation still appears to be going ahead, as the streamer recently announced some new cast members, who will portray the Norse deities in Season 2. However, the show’s future beyond Season 2 – which is likely too far into production for the streamer to pull out – is also uncertain.
