Deicide’s Glen Benton doesn’t like how new metal frontmen look.
In a recent conversation with Francisco Zamudio of KNAC.COM, the musician compared today’s metal scene to the ’70 and ’80s, explaining the difference:
“Metal was metal back then. Metal right now — you have so many subcategories of metal now, it’s ridiculous. I understand individualism and that, and we can really use a lot more frontmen like that, like Ozzy [Osbourne] and Ronnie and all them people, Lemmy and that. We don’t have that anymore. All we have is a bunch of wannabe-WEEZER-looking dudes trying to play metal.”
Benton Wants New Bands Care More About Look
He talked about current trends in metal fashion:
“Everybody’s sporting black-frame glasses and wearing trucker caps. Nobody gives a sh*t about imagery anymore, looking the part of metal and that. I walk around 24 hours a day looking [like I do]. I can’t shake it, man. I’m never gonna fall into that. I’ve always been that way, too, about the guys on stage, man. You’re not gonna come out there wearing a f*cking plaid shirt and white tennis shoes. It’s not happening.”
Ronnie Radke Agrees With Benton
Previously, Falling In Reverse frontman Ronnie Radke also criticized new metal bands for their lifestyle and lyrics. The singer wrote on X:
“Gen Z metal bands singing sh*t like ‘I will murder you and eat your brains, I am all that is evil, I am the alpha and omega,’ then get on Twitter and be like ‘I got misgendered today at Starbucks.’ Tf outta here with your soft a**.”
Following his public feud with the Sanguisugabogg frontman Devin Swank, Radke again called all the new metal band members ‘soft.’ The vocalist also thinks new hardcore bands are not as cool as the older ones used to be.
