George A. Romero was the undisputed king of zombie movies, and his final movie is now moving forward with a cast led by someone who has faced her fair share of the undead in the past. Prior to his death in 2017, Romero wrote a treatment for Twilight of the Dead – what he considered to be the final movie in his saga that began all the way back in 1968’s Night of the Living Dead. Now, according to Deadline, Resident Evil vet Milla Jovovich will be leading the movie with Get Out’s Betty Gabriel.
Twilight of the Dead will be set on a tropical island, and according to the report will “delve into the dark nature of humanity from the perspective of the last humans on Earth who are caught between factions of the undead.” This is certainly a similar scenario to many of the Living Dead movies that Romero wrote and directed, which often skewed its gory horror with a dark satirical look at how humans react to each other, along with issues of race and class.

Director of George Romero’s Final Script Updates Us on His Last Zombie Movie
George A. Romero had a plan to finish the zombie universe he began with Night of the Living Dead more than 55 years ago, and it’s coming to life.
The film will be directed by Brad Anderson, who is best known for helming the Christan Bale movie The Machinist and said of the project:
“I see this film in the same way as successful post-apocalyptic thrillers such as I Am Legend, A Quiet Place, The Road and The Last of Us — genre stories that are as emotional as they are intense. When I first read Twilight of The Dead, I teared up at the end. Which is weird for a film of this type. But it has that kind of pull, that combo of horror and heartbreak that I love.”
Twilight of the Dead is Bringing Plenty of Zombie Talent
Milla Jovovich became forever associated with the undead after starring in the original Resident Evil movie franchise, which was based on the popular survival horror video game series of the same name. Appearing in six movies between 2002 and 2016, Jovovich played Alice, a character written especially for the films that did not appear in the games, and the franchise very quickly became the highest grossing horror film series and film series based on a video game at the time of its final movie being released.
While Jovovich has seen plenty of zombie action in her career, Gabriel has not tusseled with the undead, but has appeared in plenty of horror-centric movies. Her biggest hits include The Purge: Election Year, 2017’s impressive Jordan Peele movie Get Out, Unfriended: Dark Web, and 2023’s It Lives Inside. She also starred in HBO’s Westworld, Prime Video’s Jack Ryan series.

The father of the zombie film sub-genre made us feel more alive with the undead. Here is each entry in George A. Romero’s Living Dead Trilogy, ranked.
As well as the star power in front of the camera, Greg Nicotero will be in charge of creating the zombie effects for the movie. Nicotero’s name will be familiar to many from his work on The Walking Dead, but long-term Romero fans will also know that this is something of a full-circle moment, as Nicotero actually started his career working on the director’s 1985 movie Day of the Dead, and became a regular contributor on Romero’s subsequent movies.
Twilight of the Dead is set to get cameras rolling in March 2025, but does not yet have a release date set. While this is being billed as the last of Romero’s Living Dead movies, the success of the film could well see more zombie sequels continuing the legacy of the franchise.
