Sophie Turner, who portrayed Sansa Stark, Lord Eddard Stark’s eldest daughter in Game of Thrones, recently expressed an interest in returning to the franchise. The actress has been a crucial character in the series from the first season, sometimes suffering as a hostage and other times, taking what is rightfully hers. As the story nears its conclusion, we see her crowned Queen of the North, which is a happy ending for many fans of the series.
In a recent interview with Variety, Turner shared her interest in returning as Sansa Stark, despite the fact that a ninth season of Game of Thrones is not on the cards. Turner, however, declared that she would only return if the original cast was retained, since that’s also what fans want from Game of Thrones. In her words:
“Maybe. I mean, it would have to be the exact same cast and the exact same crew otherwise I wouldn’t go back and that would just be Season 9, and I don’t think we’re going to do a Season 9, but, I mean, I loved playing Sansa, and I do wonder often what would she be doing now. Where would she be five years later, what would she be doing? Would she still be queen in the North? Would she be a good ruler? Would there be some other kind of terrible war that’s happened? I’d love to see it.”
While Season 9 is not currently in the plans of HBO, Turner’s speculative thinking on what Sansa would do a few years later is an intriguing concept to explore in the future. With several spinoffs having come and gone without making it to screens, it could still be possible that a direct sequel series could work its way into being at some point in the future.
Would a Game of Thrones Season 8 Reboot Ever Happen?
Game of Thrones is one of the greatest shows ever made, but its final season has been nothing but disappointing, from Daenerys Targaryen’s death to the underwhelming climax battle sequence. So, a remake of the eighth season would certainly be welcomed by fans who longed to witness a fitting conclusion for the series.
Since George R. R. Martin is yet to finish writing his version of the Game of Thrones finale in book form, there could be many differences between that version and the way the show ended. If we can get belated alternate sequels to popular movie franchises, such as the recent Halloween trilogy which acted as a direct continuation of John Carpenter’s 1978 film, then is it too much to believe that a reworked version of Game of Thrones could happen at some point? Since its conclusion in 2019, fans have been relentless in requesting a remake of the last season happen.
With that said, a season remake of Game of Thrones is realistically not going to happen, and fans may have to be content with shows like House of the Dragon, which has been rather impressive and rejuvenated the franchise. A few additional spinoffs are currently in development, including A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, Aegon’s Conquest, The Sea Snake, and Ten Thousand Ships – although there are conflicting reports whether all of these are still in contention.
