Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga star Anya Taylor-Joy really wants to play Elsa in a live-action Frozen movie, if for nothing more than to impress her nieces and nephews. Released in 2013, Disney’s Frozen became a widely successful hit that grossed more than $1.2 billion dollars at the box office, and became the nightmare of parents everywhere thanks to kids that couldn’t stop listening to its hit song, “Let It Go.” Its 2019 follow-up, Frozen II, proved even more successful than the first, grossing upwards of $1.4 billion, proving that there’s still a ravenous audience for the Disney series.
Speaking with Vogue Hong Kong (via Deadline), Taylor-Joy expressed enthusiasm about the possibility of portraying a real-life Elsa. While nothing has been officially announced by Disney, a Frozen live-action remake is not beyond the realm of possibility, as the company has regularly been releasing new versions of some of its most popular animated hits. For The Queen’s Gambit star, she says the thought of starring in a Disney musical appeals to her because it almost seems like an impossible task.
“I really want to do a musical because I’m a little too obsessed with my current job. I love the challenge of completing impossible tasks. I think that’s incredibly motivating for me, so the idea of being able to sing, dance, and act at the same time is really exciting to me.”
When it comes to portraying Elsa in a live-action version of Frozen, Taylor-Joy welcomes the idea, not only because it would allow her to stretch her muscles as an actress, but also because it would allow her to become the coolest aunt on the block.
Shooting ice cubes out of your hands can be a lot of fun. And, you’ll be the favorite at every kid’s birthday party. All my siblings have kids now, so I would love for them to be able to say, ‘My aunt is Elsa.’ That would be great!
Frozen Is Getting Not One, but Two Sequels
Following the success of both Frozen and Frozen II, a third entry almost seemed inevitable. The only question that remained was when it would debut. Thanks to D23 happening last month, we now know that Frozen 3 is earmarked for a November 24, 2027 premiere, which follows the Thanksgiving tradition of previous releases.
That wasn’t the only surprise coming out of D23, however, as it was also hinted that Frozen 4 is also in the works. Franchise writer/director Jennifer Lee seemingly confirmed what Disney CEO Bob Iger said last year about the project, saying that “There were a lot of questions coming out of Frozen 2… it will take two films to answer them.”
Two more films? Yes, please! Frozen is undoubtedly some of the best storytelling Disney has had in recent years, and two more additions to the franchise are gladly welcomed. With Anna now Queen of Arendelle and Elsa the protector of the Enchanted Forest, we can’t wait to see where Lee and company take us next. As for Taylor-Joy starring in a live-action version? That remains to be seen for now, but we can totally see it. We’ll have more news on the Frozen franchise as it becomes available.
