After Creature Commandos arrives later this year, the true kickoff to James Gunn’s new DC Universe is his upcoming Superman reboot in 2025. Outside of a few promotional pictures, audiences haven’t seen much about the superhero movie, but that might change because the director has seemingly teased that a trailer is arriving sooner rather than later.
On Threads, Gunn answered a question from a fan asking if there would be a Superman trailer or teaser before the end of the year, and he replied with a thinking emoji. Of course, this isn’t an answer one way or another, but Gunn not outright denying it (which he does all the time) could be an indication that a trailer is indeed coming soon. The first Superman footage would give fans a chance to see David Corenswet’s hero in action, and potentially reveal the film’s main villains, rumored to be the Authority, as well as Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor.
While we know all about the faces of the new DCU, including both Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre leading the Lanterns show, we haven’t seen any trailers or teasers outside of Creature Commandos. Of course, that is not out of the ordinary, but with the wait between now and Superman drawing near, it makes sense for DC to start building up some hype. Superhero movies outside of Deadpool & Wolverine have left a lot to be desired at the box office as of late. Most recently, Joker: Folie à Deux was the follow-up to a billion-dollar film and completely tanked theatrically.

DC Studios Has a Lot of Work to Do
When Gunn announced he was taking over, it left the remaining DC movies on the slate hung out to dry. None of them reached the expectations set for them at the box office, but it’s difficult to fault them too much after audiences found out they wouldn’t matter in the long run. However, a different problem plagued them, and it’s that they weren’t great movies either. Shazam! Fury of the Gods and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom secured rotten ratings on Rotten Tomatoes. It was not a good recipe for success, souring general audiences and fans of the franchise on future offerings.

Superman Reboot Casts Fan-Favorite Sci-Fi Actor in Secret Role
The DCU adds another big star.
It’s going to come down to whether or not the general audience understands a fresh reboot is happening, but DC could be clearer in that area. Some actors are returning from the past universe, like John Cena and Viola Davis, so it can get confusing if you’re not keeping up to date with everything. One key indicator for audiences not in the know is the fact that Henry Cavill isn’t playing Superman in the upcoming film.
What is still looming over the DC universe is who will end up portraying Batman and taking over the reins from Ben Affleck. Gunn has shot down any and all rumors about people being cast, so it seems like the hunt is still on to find out who is donning the cowl. DC has already announced a new Batman film is in development, but it doesn’t have a release date, so it’ll still be quite a while before we see it hit the big screen.
