According to its official synopsis, the action-comedy follows an “ex-special forces operative (Cena) stuck in a dead-end desk job, who reluctantly takes on a gig to provide private security for a washed-up journalist (Brie) as she interviews a ruthless – but impeccably dressed – dictator (Juan Pablo Raba).
“When a military coup breaks out just as she’s about to get the scoop of a lifetime, the unlikely trio must figure out how to survive the jungle, the assassins, and each other in order to make it out alive.”

The action-packed trailer showcases Cena in his element, with set pieces taking place in the jungle as well as the packed streets of the fictional Paldonia. Brie, who has starred in GLOW and Community, provides comic relief to Cena’s brawn.
In addition to the aforementioned trio, the cast for Freelance includes Alice Eve, Martin Csokas and Christian Slater. The movie is directed by Taken‘s Pierre Morel, and has been written by Jacob Lentz.
With the tagline “saving the day doesn’t come cheap”, Freelance will be released in cinemas in the US on October 6, with a UK release date to be confirmed.
Whilst fans won’t have to wait long to see Brie with Cena in Freelance, they might have to temper their expectations regarding her return as Annie Edison in the Community movie, with the planned feature-length film recently suffering a delay.

Joel McHale, who played Jeff Winger on the show, recently confirmed that production had ceased on Community: The Movie following the strike from the Writers Guild of America (WGA), with the actor pledging his support to their cause.
“I’m not exactly sure, but I’m guessing it’s [Community: The Movie] not going to start on time,” he revealed. “I don’t say this lightly, but I stand with the WGA, and there’s no doubt that pay has gone down 23% since 2007, and that needs to change.”
Since McHale’s comments, SAG-AFTRA, the guild which represents Hollywood actors, has also gone on strike.
Freelance will be released in US cinemas on October 6.
