The end of the road may be nigh for the Fast & Furious family, but one member says that, despite an expected 2025 production start for the final installment in the main franchise, he has yet to see a script for the movie. Beginning in 2001 with The Fast and the Furious, the billion dollar franchise has seen 10 entries thus far in the main saga, one spinoff movie, an animated series, and a couple of short films. 2023’s Fast X was the latest installment, and despite making over $700 million at the worldwide box office, it was decided that it’s time to put the brakes on the series, and end it once and for all.
Tyrese Gibson, whose character of Roman Pearce joined the franchise in 2003, recently appeared on the Happy Sad Confused podcast with Josh Horowitz to discuss his latest drama, 1992, and the conversation inevitably turned to the Fast & Furious franchise. Gibson confirmed reports that the series is going back to its roots with the last entry, saying, “They are taking it back to the streets, taking it back to the basics, which the fans deserve.”
Gibson would then add, “Fast and Furious, Transformers, all of these franchise films changed my life.” Up until 2003, the singer/actor had appeared in a number of small television roles, mainly as himself, before appearing in the critically acclaimed 2001 John Singleton film, Baby Boy. Though he was praised for his performance, it wasn’t until 2 Fast 2 Furious in 2003 that Gibson’s acting career really took hold, and – as he said – his life was forever changed.
Now, more than 20 years later and going into the final Fast & Furious movie, Gibson says he has yet to see a script for the film. However, the 45-year-old seems to be taking it all in stride, saying that, despite the hiccup, he’s still in contact with star Vin Diesel and that, when the time comes, he’ll be ready.
“I haven’t read a script yet. I’ve talked to the director, I’m constantly in touch with Vin Diesel and they do really well at keeping this franchise afloat and the moment that I get the call, I’m going to show up and try and do my job and hope that they’re still happy with what I bring to the table.”
Fast 11 Is Still a Long Way Off
Originally shooting for an April 2025 release date, Fast 11 was delayed due to the 2023 WGA/SAG-AFTRA strikes which brought Hollywood to a standstill. In many ways, it feels like the industry is still recovering from the strikes, and thanks to the lengthy delay, it now remains unclear as to when production for Fast 11 will get underway. We do know that it will be at some point in 2025, a fact that Gibson himself confirmed earlier this year.
“Because of the strike, both strikes, there were some real delays in writing and kind of getting the film up on its feet. I’m hearing that we’re going to get it going right in 2025, right at the top of the year.”

While no official word has come down that yes, Fast 11 will start shooting at the beginning of 2025, Fast X director Louis Leterrier will be returning for the final installment. However, there’s no way it will be able to make its projected April release date, with Leterrier now saying that fans can expect to see Gibson and crew make their final ride at some point in 2026.
