Ben Affleck’s highly anticipated sequel to The Accountant has finally been rated by the MPAA, and the result is good news for action movie fans. The Accountant 2 has officially been given an R-rating, for strong violence and language, leaving fans expecting the kind of brutal, action-packed follow-up they have been waiting almost a decade for.
The Accountant was released in 2016, and the Gavin O’Connor-directed movie became a surprising hit for Affleck. The actor has constantly found his movies coming under fire from critics, and this one was no exception, and it only scored 52% with Rotten Tomatoes critics. But the film grossed $155 million on the back of its $44 million budget, and landed a respectable 76% Popcornmeter score from audiences to boot, making a sequel almost inevitable.
The film stars Affleck as a public accountant with autism who secretly works for criminal organizations under the name Christian Wolff to discover if their “cooked” books are missing any money. However, things get tricky for Wolff when one job puts him in the firing line of several hitmen who attempt to stop his investigations into the company and its CEO. Affleck’s performance as Wolff received high praise, and with action movies being at an all-time high, there is no better time for him to return to role for another dramatic installment.
What We Know About ‘The Accountant 2’
The Accountant 2 has been in development for some time, originating back in 2017 after the success of the first movie. By 2020, there had been little movement on the sequel, although Affleck hoped to still make the film if they could “get a script together.” Following the Covid pandemic, and several Hollywood strikes, The Accountant 2 seemed to have slipped off everyone’s radar.
However, in February this year, it was announced that filming was set to begin on the new movie, which would be financed by Amazon MGM Studios. News of the sequel saw a surge of interest in the original movie, which topped the Netflix chart in March, and suggested that there is certainly a healthy appetite out there for the sequel.
