Former Metallica bassist Ron McGovney has responded to a picture of the car from the incident that changed Metallica’s history.
The rocker took to X to respond to a photo shared by a fan page. In the picture, the bassist is sitting down under a tree in front of his car. He responded to the picture with:
“If y’all know the Dave story about his dogs scratching my car, well, that’s the car.”
What The Incident Caused
There have been many rumors about the band’s split with Dave Mustaine. One of the most talked-about rumors was that James Hetfield kicked Mustaine’s dog.
Mustaine brought his dog to a rehearsal, and the dog scratched Ron McGovney’s car. The incident caused Hetfield to overreact and reportedly kick the dog. In response, Mustaine hit Hetfield in the face.
The relationship between Hetfield and Mustaine was already not going so well, so the incident played a big role in Mustaine’s exit from Metallica.
Mustaine’s Regret
In an interview with Revolver, Mustaine talked about the incident and admitted regretting his reaction. He said it was ‘stupid’ to bring his dog to rehearsal and to hit his bandmate because of what happened with Hetfield and his dog. Mustaine acknowledged he can’t change what happened and said he feels sorry about it too.
Although there have been some issues between the two parties in the past, Mustaine shared genuine respect for Hetfield for both his role in Metallica and his personality:
“He’s always been somebody that I really liked playing with. I wished things wouldn’t have ended the way that they did. But que sera, sera. It was a dumb thing that I did by taking my dog up to practice, and it was even dumber to punch him. I really respect him, and I respect his playing. And I hope he knows that there are a lot of people out there, like me, that like him as a person and don’t give two f*cks about him being in Metallica.”
