Ewan McGregor still thinks plenty of Obi-Wan Kenobi’s stories are left to tell. McGregor first joined the Star Wars franchise in 1999’s The Phantom Menace as the young version of Obi-Wan Kenobi, taking over the role originated by Alec Guinness in the original trilogy. He reprised his role in 2002’s Attack of the Clones and 2005’s Revenge of the Sith. In 2022, 17 years after he last played the character, McGregor returned for the Disney+ spinoff series Obi-Wan Kenobi.
McGregor is finally set to get a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and he sat down to talk with Variety about his career. During the interview, he said he would like to play Obi-Wan Kenobi once more following the Disney+ series. While some might think Obi-Wan’s story is done as the character was hiding out from the Empire before the events of the first Star Wars, the actor sees plenty of stories the franchise can tell, filling in the gap between the spinoff and Obi-Wan saving Luke Skywalker from the Tusken Raiders. McGregor said:
“I really do hope we get a chance to do another one. Between where we ended off in the series and when Alec Guinness comes on screen with Luke Skywalker, I think there’s another few stories to tell in there.”
Will There be an Obi-Wan Kenobi Season 2?
While Obi-Wan Kenobi aired as a Disney+ series, it was originally planned as a movie before the box office failure of Solo: A Star Wars Story, which made Lucasfilm take a new approach with the Star Wars franchise. Obi-Wan Kenobi was outlined as a trilogy of films, so with that in mind, there are more stories the creators could tell following the events of the first season of the series. The Star Wars comics delved into Obi-Wan’s life on Tattooine, and with the final episode of Obi-Wan Kenobi seeing the famous Jedi meet the Force ghost of his master, Qui-Gon Jinn, that could build to an exciting new story. A new Obi-Wan Kenobi series with Ewan McGregor reprising his role alongside Liam Neeson as Qui-Gon Jinn would be an exciting hook for fans.
That said, Obi-Wan Kenobi Season 2 seems a little unlikely. Disney and Lucasfilm are seemingly pulling back on Star Wars television series. They have already canceled The Acolyte, and The Mandalorian Season 4 has seemingly been scrapped in favor of a big-budget feature film, The Mandalorian & Grogu. The production schedule also looks slim: following Skeleton Crew at the end of December 2024, the only Disney+ Star Wars series set for 2025 appears to be Andor Season 2. Ahsoka Season 2 is not expected until 2026, which is the same year The Mandalorian & Grogu is set for release.
In fact, it appears Lucasfilm is reversing course, shifting away from the Disney+ Star Wars series and returning the franchise to the big screen. Alongside The Mandalorian & Grogu, they also have another Star Wars film that will unite many of the live-action Disney+ series into a crossover film. Director James Mangold is working on a movie focused on the very first Jedi, and Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy is directing a new movie featuring Daisy Ridley’s Rey. Ewan McGregor could reprise his role as Obi-Wan Kenobi in a Star Wars feature film, bringing the story full circle from a movie to a Disney+ series back to a movie.
