Erik Grönwall shared a recent vlog on his YouTube channel, sharing details about his health status and its impact on Skid Row’s touring schedule. According to his updates, the musician still needs some time to recover.
Grönwall recalled waking up with a complete loss of voice after a successful performance:
“I had a great performance, a great night. And then I went to bed, and I woke up, and I was like, ‘What the actual f*ck?’ It came from nowhere. I woke up; I had no voice. It was just gone. I couldn’t even warm up, but we tried our best until the last minute.”
He then explained such unexpected health issues have broader implications:
“It sucks because we were out here, we wanna perform and want to do what we love, but when you postpone, there’s a lot of people that get affected by a decision like that. There are a lot of people involved in making a show happen, which makes me feel bad. But also, health first. I believe everybody gets this.”
Grönwall battled and overcame acute lymphoblastic leukemia. The singer underwent a medical procedure – a stem cell transplantation – on August 12, 2021. Reflecting on his recovery journey, he continued:
“So, for those of you who don’t know, I had a bone marrow transplant two years ago, and I have a new immune system. I have a new blood type; I’m completely new. My immune system is two years old; that’s something I just have to live with. Believe me, it beats the alternative.”
The musician ended his words by expressing regret for the changes but emphasizing the necessity of such decisions for health concerns:
“It’s going to take a while to build up the resistance and the immune system again. So, six months after my transplant, I was on tour with Skid Row — it’s been going great, but I need more time to recover. You know, being on tour six months after a transplant, after chemo and everything, is not really standard. My body and my immune system obviously need more time to recover.”
Grönwall’s stem cell transplantation left him with a partially impaired immune system. The complications that arise from such a condition mean that he requires longer recovery times from infections and reduced physical stamina during illness bouts.
This is not the first time health concerns have interfered with the band’s schedule. In May 2023, a show in Brisbane had to be canceled due to issues related to Grönwall’s voice. During that period, Grönwall was experiencing flu-like symptoms, which affected his vocal performance.
On September 14, Skid Row informed fans that their October 2023 tour dates with Buckcherry will now take place in March 2024. Despite these setbacks, they confirmed that their September 2023 shows will proceed as planned. However, the state of their future performances, especially those in Europe, remains up in the air, given Grönwall’s current health.
