Dusty’s Last Wish
Before he passed away, Dusty Hill assured Billy Gibbons that Francis could handle his bass duties. Gibbons trusted Dusty’s suggestion and moved forward with Francis on bass. Gibbons also appreciated Francis’ energy and musical skills, and even said it was beyond their expectations. In an interview in 2022, Gibbons praised Francis and his familiarity with the band’s music and arrangements:
“I said, ‘No, no, that guy had a beard.’ He said, ‘Believe it or not, that’s your man, Elwood.’ So, he is not only a great player with raucous antics but also the way he attacks the guitar. Dusty showed us a sliver of his wisdom that went far beyond what we ever anticipated when he said, ‘Hand the guitar to Elwood.’ So here we are. Elwood stepped up and accepted the position. It’s great, knowing that in spirit, Dusty is leading the charge here.”
ZZ Top Still Continue To Perform
In June 2023, Billy Gibbons reflected on Dusty in an interview with Louder Sound. He mentioned Dusty as both a bandmate and a family. Following the late bassist’s wishes, Elwood Francis stepped in to honor his legacy.
Gibbons recognized that Elwood added something special to the band and hinted they were working on new songs. At the same time, he’s also shared how he feels Dusty can never be replaced.
Even though they lost one of their original members in 2021, ZZ Top still continue performing under their name.
