Fans of The Penguin are not done pawing over the show yet, searching for every possible clue to what could be coming next in Matt Reeves’ The Batman universe. Some with a keen eye for small background details have come to the conclusion that there has been a tease of another villain lurking in the shadows…and no, it isn’t the Joker.
The Penguin delivered plenty for fans to savor, with nods to 2022’s The Batman, an intriguing and brutal story of power and revenge, and above all else, a deep dive into the version of Gotham City that was only hinted at previously. Now that the series is over, and there is a lengthy wait for The Batman Part II to hit cinemas in 2026, fans have been trying to work out what comes next. Thanks to a detail noted in a Reddit conversation, many now believe that one of the next villains to make an appearance in the franchise could be Scarecrow.
Following the finale of the series, one user returned to rewatch Episode 4, one of the standout installments, titled “Cent’Anni”. This episode provided a backstory for Sofia Falcone, and saw her interacting with Arkham Asylum psychiatrist Julian Rush. While only appearing as a minor character, Rush is one of the many intriguing characters introduced for the series, and has potential to appear again as a version of Jonathan Crane aka Scarecrow. During the episode, it was spotted that Rush’s office contains what appears to be the mask and syringe-fingered glove of the fear-inducing antagonist, and fans can’t stop thinking about it.
‘The Batman’ Could Have Other Spinoffs in Development
Matt Reeves’ The Batman is a version of the Dark Knight that has not been previously seen on screen. A dark, disturbing, and gritty take on the DC Comics franchise, there are no flashy gadgets, and no witty one-liners to be found in this version of Gotham City. Instead, we see grounded characters, who present “real” villains and a hero who is working with his unique mind rather than James Bond-style toys.
While two spinoffs from The Batman, one centered on the Gotham City Police Department and another on Arkham Asylum, have fallen by the wayside, the incredibly successful run of The Penguin seems to have revived the idea of more spinoffs being looked at. While Reeves has shut down rumors of a Catwoman series – which would have seen the return of Zoe Kravitz as the agile anti-heroin – and James Gunn debunked the idea of a Joker series being in the works, it seems that one character who could unexpectedly get their own show is Cristin Milioti’s Sofia Falcone/Gigante. Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Reeves said:
“Cristin is so incredible. That was so personal to Lauren’s vision that digging into [Sofia’s story] further is a very exciting prospect. But where it will go, truly, we don’t know yet. I’ve found that when you take on projects, they start to have a life of their own. You discover certain things within them. We knew the way Cristin realized the character was incredible as soon as the dailies started coming in.”

Matt Reeves also answers one of the biggest questions left by The Penguin.
A new series following Sofia in Arkham Asylum could see the return of Julian Rush in a larger capacity, and in turn could see these assumptions about his dark alter-ego being confirmed. However, even if that series does not happen, there seems to be too much of a coincidence in the presence of that glove and mask for it to not mean anything. No doubt we will find out the truth in time, but it could be a lengthy wait.
