Thanks to the explosive new movie Aftermath, two unlikely action stars have emerged on the scene by way of Dylan Sprouse and Mason Gooding, and for them, it’s hopefully just the start of things to come. Sprouse is perhaps best remembered for his role on the Disney Channel series The Suite Life of Zack and Cody, while Gooding is recognized for his part in the Scream franchise as Chad Meeks-Martin, the nephew of Jamie Kennedy’s character, Randy.
Aftermath sees Sprouse as Eric Daniels, a war vet with PTSD who gets trapped with his little sister on a bridge full of domestic terrorists led by Gooding. Directed by Partick Lussier, it’s a ticking-clock thriller with lots of gunfire and explosions that’s reminiscent of action flicks of the ’90s; the ones you can watch over and over again. MovieWeb recently caught up with the pair (seen below) to discuss what it was like to step into the genre for the first time, with Sprouse commenting that it felt like the most natural thing in the world, despite not being able to see himself as a leading man.

The Best Action Movie of Every Year in the 90s
The 90s birthed some of the best films of all time and the action genre is no exception. Here are the best films from each year.
“It’s so, so, so much fun. Honestly. I will say, and I’ve said this previously, if you were to ask me five years ago if I thought I would be leading an action movie, I would give you a hard no, because I just always saw myself as more of a silly, geeky guy. But in that way, I think, it has trained me to be a physical performer in a lot of ways. So the marriage of all this stuff I grew up loving – which was sword fighting with my brother, and going outside and shooting off airsoft guns.”
Part of what made the experience fun for Sprouse was getting to star alongside Gooding, as the two were friends before filming on Aftermath began. Knowing that he was paired with someone familiar allowed him to obtain a certain level of comfort, so much so that now he says the action genre is where he’d love to stay.
“It’s every boy’s dream to do a movie like this, especially with someone who I was previously friends with even before we shot this movie in Mason, who I knew was going to meet me at that level. I would do action movies for the rest of my life. I mean, when you’re just getting trained by Navy SEALs, and rolling around, and shooting airsoft guns, it’s like, what more can you ask for?”
Aftermath is Just the Beginning of Sprouse and Gooding’s Action-Packed Future
Now that Aftermath is in the can, Sprouse and Gooding are set to team up once more in yet another action-packed movie, Under Fire. Starring as two undercover agents unaware of each other’s identities, they must join forces to survive a deadly ambush at the Mexico border. Directed by Stephen C. Miller (Werewolves), its comedic undertones separate it from their previous pairing, and when asked if this is the start of a beautiful friendship, Gooding wasn’t hesitant to say that when it comes to leading a film with his friend, he’d jump at the chance to say yes.
“I hope so. I would do any movie under the sun with Dylan. Under Fire’s just the beginning. We gotta do Under Cover, Under Duress, we gotta get Dwayne Johnson in here. We’ve got movies to go, dude. This is just the beginning.”
Here’s hoping he’s right, because honestly, Sprouse and Gooding have great chemistry together, which, if given the chance, could lead to a lot of fun movies down the line. We’ll keep our fingers crossed that this becomes a thing, but in the meantime, check out their action debut in Aftermath.
