In a recent tweet, Dee Snider said he earned a lot from the ‘Spongebob’ deal.
The frontman said that ‘I Wanna Rock’ and ‘We’re Not Gonna Take It’ were highly licensed 80’s hits and boosted his bank account significantly. Then, a user asked whether having ‘I Wanna Rock’ covered by SpongeBob was also good for his finances. He replied:
“Believe me, they had to pay me a LOT to let me change the words like they did. I’m a wh*re…but an expensive wh*re!”
Snider Further Speaks On The Cover
‘Goofy Goober Rock,’ a version of ‘I Wanna Rock’ with new lyrics, was in ‘The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie’ and performed by Jim Wise and Tom Rothrock. Previously, in an appearance on AXS TV’s The Top Ten Revealed, Snider said licensing the song for SpongeBob paid him a lot and praised the show for it:
“‘I Wanna Rock’, directed by Marty Callner, who directed the first Twisted video, ‘We’re Not Gonna Take It’, was actually part two. It was, like, here’s dad, the d*ck at home. What happens when he goes to work? Well, he’s a nasty school teacher. Years later, I got a phone call [from] my manager that ‘SpongeBob Squarepants’ was interested in using ‘I Wanna Rock’ as the big finale in ‘The SpongeBob Squarepants Movie’.”
The singer continued, sharing his reaction to the licensing of the track:
“I immediately lit up — licensing is fantastic; I have two kids in college. And he goes, ‘There’s one catch. They wanna change the words to ‘Goofy Goober Rock’.’ Well, I lose my mind. I’m, like, ‘Are you kidding me? This is my music. This is my art. How much? Do they want me to sing it?’ They paid me a lot of money. It’s called ‘Goofy Goober Rock’. God bless ‘SpongeBob Squarepants’.”
The song appeared on ‘The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie’ soundtrack album. Nerdist rated ‘Goofy Goober Rock’ the fourth-best song from SpongeBob.
