Imagine Dragons recently sat down with KROQ for a new interview. During their chat, frontman Dan Reynolds revealed he often writes their songs for himself.
When asked about their most recent album, ‘Loom’ and why the band decided to announce that they were back with the single ‘Eyes Closed,’ the frontman explained:
“I think a narrative that I always find myself writing about is self-empowerment because it often comes from a place of kind of false bravado. I think people probably hear that song and hopefully hear confidence in it but it really is a moment of weakness for me when I turn to writing music like that because I’m battling something whether it’s my mind or some physical thing. I always have written music first and foremost for myself. As selfish as that sounds, I’m trying to write something to give me peace in that moment.”
Reynolds also explained why he has been writing the songs for himself:
“It might be that I need to write something angry, it might need be something sad and in that case, it’s something to try to tell myself, ‘You can do this, step up, you can do this. Stop being a victim.’”
What Does The Album Mean?
The band released their sixth studio album on June 28 this year. In another interview, the frontman explained the inspirations behind the nine-track LP. He said of the song ‘Eyes Closed’ that arrived on May 3:
“‘Eyes Closed’ is about something that looks perfect and idyllic and then you tap it and it falls into a million pieces. The idea behind that song is that I could do this with my eyes closed, it’s so easy, but the reality is I was not really loving myself or feeling any of those things I was writing about.”
Moreover, Reynolds feels like ‘Loom’ is one of their most ‘colorful’ albums. In the same interview, he stated that there are brighter songs in the album than the rest of their records:
“That’s the reason we chose the sunset/sunrise artwork for the cover because the image can be perceived either way. The record feels like the beginning of things and also the death of things… It’s all about change. There are definitely more bright songs than any other record we’ve done, but there are also moments of reflection and heartache.”
