In a recent chat with Blabbermouth, Griffin Taylor confirmed Corey Taylor isn’t in charge of Vended.
“Not really. Simon and I do talk to our dads. We fill them in on what’s happening,” Griffin said when asked whether his dad helped them out and was available when he needed them. “There’s no string-pulling here. There’s no, ‘Oh. Let me do something.’ It’s our job to take matters into our own hands.”
Taylor continued, “They don’t really do something for us other than give advice when we ask for it. It’s not like they’re throwing advice at us every other f*cking day of the week. It’s overall conversation and just being a father, in general. Letting your kid figure it out for themselves, but also being, ‘Here’s what I think about this.’”
Vended features Griffin and Simon Crahan (son of Shawn Crahan). It is a new band from the nu-metal era. Despite their famous fathers, they are trying to succeed on their own. They’ve played at Knotfest and will again this fall. Their debut album, out in September, is a mix of nu-metal and modern metal.
Last year, Corey Taylor talked about his son Griffin’s music career and whether Griffin asks for advice during a Barstool Backstage interview. The singer explained, “He asks now, like, in the beginning, when he was first starting out, I didn’t want to offer anything; I never pushed him towards music.”
Corey continued, “He kind of came into it on his own. I tried to teach him how to play it. He’s gonna be twenty-one this year. When he first started, when he really started to get into it, he was about fourteen. He started doing stuff at his school for talent shows.”
“He’d come to me saying, ‘I need you to cut a song together for me with no lyrics,’” the frontman recalled. “So, I was like, ‘What the hell are you talking about?’ So, I would do these weird edits for Avenged Sevenfold and he’d sing that for his school. He was always vocals; he didn’t have the patience ’cause I tried to sit him down and teach him guitar. He didn’t want to have anything and I was like, ‘Fine.’”
Taylor also explained that his son Griffin started the band Vended by teaching himself drums and forming a band with his middle school friends. They later added Simon Crahan when their original drummer left. Taylor said watching Griffin’s band grow reminded him of the early days of Slipknot.
