The TV and radio presenter shared the anecdote whilst accepting the Outstanding Achievement Award at the Edinburgh TV Festival last Thursday (August 24).
The comment came from her eldest son Jake, 19, who she shares with her film producer husband Kris Thykier. The couple also share daughter Matilda, 16, and 11-year-old son Arthur.

“He said to me ‘Mum, you have got to stop doing Strictly, it’s so embarrassing and my teacher has mentioned it’,” she said.
“I just went, ‘See those trainers, Jake?’,” she added. “He was like, ‘OK, sorry!'”
Winkleman currently co-presents the hit dancing show with Tess Daly. She originally presented the weeknight spin-off Strictly It Takes Two from 2004 until 2010, when she joined Daly on the Sunday night results show.

The Traitors UK presenter was then promoted to permanent co-host after the late Bruce Forsyth announced his retirement from the show.
Of her Strictly role, Winkleman said at the festival: “My only job is to make sure [the celebs] are OK and to stop speaking on time.
“I know I’m not allowed to say I just paint myself orange and I read out loud, but really that is what I do most of the time. So, that’s the gig but it’s really, really thrilling.”

Winkleman will be returning to her Strictly post very soon, as the 2023 series kicks off this Autumn.
This year’s line-up includes several stars of the small screen, from Coronation Street star Ellie Leach to Sherlock actress Amanda Abbington, EastEnders actor Bobby Brazier, plus Emmerdale and Waterloo Road star Adam Thomas.
Journalist Angela Rippon, news anchor Krishnan Guru-Murthy and BBC Asian Network breakfast show presenter Nikita Kanda will also be waltzing their way onto the dancefloor, alongside Family Fortunes host and comedian Les Dennis.
Paralympian Jody Cundy, Love Island‘s Zara McDermott, Bad Education star and West End actor Layton Williams, TV presenter Angela Scanlon and comedian Eddie Kadi make up the rest of the line-up, with 15 celebrities competing in total.
Strictly Come Dancing airs on BBC One, while spin-off Strictly: It Takes Two airs on BBC Two. Both shows are available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
