Every doll has its day, and it looks like Chucky has had his with news that the popular TV series based on the Child’s Play franchise has been canceled after three seasons. The final episodes aired in May 2024, and since then there has been little word on whether fans would get to see the little bundle of murder and mayhem return for a fourth season. Now, creator Don Mancini has revealed the fate of the show in a regretful statement. He said:
“I’m heartbroken over the news that ‘Chucky’ won’t be coming back for a fourth season, but am so grateful for the killer three years we did have. I’d like to thank UCP/SYFY/Peacock/Eat the Cat, our awesome cast and Toronto-based crew (the best in the business), and finally, to our amazing fans, a big bloody hug. Your incredible #RenewChucky campaign really warmed Chucky’s cold heart. Chucky will return! He ALWAYS comes back.”
Mancini previously spoke about his ideas for both Season 4 of Chucky, and also a new movie that he believed would work “in tandem.” Back in April, Mancini told Screen Rant:
“[The show and the movie working] in tandem is my hope. We’re hoping to get a season 4 of the show. Fingers crossed. I pitched the idea already to the network, so we’re hoping on that, but I’m also in the early stages of developing a new movie now, and the movie is designed to work in tandem with the show. That’s what we hope in our dream of conquering the universe, is that we can keep expanding the Chucky-verse in this way. That’s my hope so we’ll see what happens.”
What the cancelation of Chucky means for those movie plans is yet to be seen, but it seems that the creator of one of the world’s most infamous playthings is certain that his little killing machine will be back in action at some point in the future.
Brad Dourif is Retired… Except When Playing Chucky
While there is still a chance that Chucky will be back in some form in the future, especially if Mancini’s movie plan still comes together, one thing for certain is that if the killer doll doesn’t make another appearance, then actor Brad Dourif may have just officially retired from the industry.
The actor was previously said to be in a state of retirement, and only voicing his most iconic role was enough to get him back to work. Earlier in the year, JoBlo’s Tyler Nichols reported that:
“[Brad] Dourif said that he’s retired from acting. The only reason he came back for the show was because of his daughter Fiona, and he considers Chucky creator Don Mancini to be family. But for non-Chucky stuff, he considers himself retired.”
With that in mind, it is likely that should a new Chucky movie materialize, the 74-year-old actor will be back in the booth recording his lines once more. If not, then the near 40-year legacy of Chucky will certainly live on in his many previous outings.
Seasons 1-3 of
Chucky
can currently be streamed on Peacock and Shudder.
