In a video with Premier Guitar about his live setup, Chris Shiflett joked that a Charvel-style custom Superstrat was ‘so illegal’ for a Foo Fighters tour.
“I always wanted to put together a Superstrat or whatever, so I did that,” the guitarist said. “I brought it out on tour. I mean, that is like so illegal in the Foo Fighters but I’ve slipped it in just a little bit without asking!”
Shiflett brought this guitar on tour with the Foo Fighters, initially as a backup, but has since started using it more during shows. He continued, “I really brought it out because there’s a section in the show where Dave introduces everybody, and everybody does a little something, and I sorta worked that in to do a little homage to some of my favourite players.”
The musician added, “I’ll do a little taste of Randy Rhoads, a little bit of ‘Eruption,’ and a little bit of ‘Thunderstruck,’ AC/DC, and so I wanted to bring that guitar with me so I could do some tremolo bar dives and stuff.”
Chris also previously worked with Fender on a signature version of his expensive Custom Shop Telecaster Deluxe with P-90 pickups. “I don’t know how familiar you are with my signature model, but the original one is a production model that has humbuckers in it,” Shiflett told MusicRadar about it. “It was geared towards rock and what I do in Foo Fighters. Then we did a super-duper fancy master-built version that had P-90s and it was really expensive.”
He then noted, “One was really affordable and one was really, really expensive. So we’ve got one that’s coming out kind of down the middle that’s an American-made production version of the one with P-90s. The master-built version had noiseless Lindy Fralin P-90s in it. The production model has sort of a Fender version of that, I believe Tim Shaw designed them. And it sounds really good. It’s very close to the Fralins.”
The guitarist’s next show with Foo Fighters is on September 29 at the Soundside Music Festival in Bridgeport.
