In a new interview with The Metal Voice, Ex-Runaways singer Cherie Currie revealed Rush tried to sabotage them during their live performance.
During the chat, the singer was asked about rumors that Rush tried to mess with them at a 1977 show and brought up a photo of both bands together. After revealing that the picture was taken right after the soundcheck, Currie explained how the band ‘sabotaged’ them:
“Rush, they sabotaged our set and I noticed and we’re at Kobo Hall. It’s a big venue and I saw them, they were throwing pieces of paper, just like standard 8 by 10 paper onto the stage, whipping it like you would a pizza, right? I was in 6-in platform booths and I had to jump off of Sandy’s drum riser and I hit one of those pieces of paper and I slid across that stage.”
Currie then explained how she saved herself from getting injured:
“There was an orchestra pit with all the photographers and I’ll never forget seeing them reach up with fear that I was going to go over and somehow some way I caught myself right at the last minute and did one of those to one of the photographers. I came so close that I could have been paralyzed. I mean I’m not overstating. I would have been very much injured had I gone off that stage. So that’s why Joan and I, in particular, don’t care much for them because they weren’t protecting us, they were sabotaging us that night.”
Rush’s Side Of The Story
A story will always have two different sides to it, and Geddy Lee has one too.
Over ten years ago, the Rush frontman responded to the claims that the band were jerks to The Runaways. He said The Runaways never got a soundcheck that they and that they were ‘too sh*tty to listen to’:
“The Runaways had a ginormous chip on their shoulders. I remember that show. We had trouble with our gear so our soundcheck got delayed and The Runaways never got one. But we were always good to whoever was opening for us. We had no bias against them because they were girls – none of that bullsh*t. I know they said that we were laughing at them when they played, but quite frankly they were too sh*tty to listen to. And 40 years later they have a story to tell about it. Who knew?”
The story also made it to the 2010 Runaways biopic with the same name.
